(23,946 posts)"Maurice Sinet, 80, who works under the pen name Sine, faces charges of "inciting racial hatred" for a column he wrote last July in the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. The piece sparked a summer slanging match among the Parisian intelligentsia and ended in his dismissal from the magazine.
"L'affaire Sine" followed the engagement of Mr Sarkozy, 22, to Jessica Sebaoun-Darty, the Jewish heiress of an electronic goods chain. Commenting on an unfounded rumour that the president's son planned to convert to Judaism, Sine quipped: "He'll go a long way in life, that little lad."
A high-profile political commentator slammed the column as linking prejudice about Jews and social success.
Charlie Hebdo's editor, Philippe Val, asked Sinet to apologise but he refused, exclaiming: "I'd rather cut my balls off."
...............
His article and cartoons in the magazine Charlie Hebdo relating to Jean Sarkozy's marriage to Jessica Sebaoun-Darty, the Jewish heiress, touched off a controversy, after journalist Claude Askolovitch described them as anti-Semitic.[3] The magazine's editor, Phillipe Val, ordered Siné to write a letter of apology or face termination. The cartoonist said he would rather "cut his own balls off", and was promptly fired.[4] Both sides subsequently filed lawsuits, and in December 2010, Siné won a 40,000-euro court judgment against his former publisher for wrongful termination.
He was subsequently taken to court by the Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme (LICRA), an organization which works to promote racial tolerance.

[has] my gratitude and respect for being the first to stand against human rights violations carried out by the powerful rather than the powerless. By refusing to compromise their principles in the face of intimidation, [Russia has] earned the respect of the world. Edward Snowden
So if you are SO against apparent hypocrites...what is your view on THIS statement? Gonna condemn Snowden right? I mean, fair is fair right?
I'll wait.

(65,616 posts)Fact - the rag you are posting so proudly from supports right wing ideology. Now if you do too, please just admit to it and not hide behind anonymous posts.
Thanks.

(3,425 posts)about the subjects of their articles, I have no idea if that is true or not. However, if you are trying to find a reason to view the murdered victims in a less favorable light, that is just plain disgusting.
Twelve people were murdered for what they wrote, whether the material was biased or not (and again I have no idea). It certainly has no bearing on this crime and it does you no credit to post in now.

(29,503 posts)to a higher standard are being bigoted. Far from disgusting, it serves to help support the idea of Freedom of Worship, and thus liberty.
It's convenient for bigots to claim that this story has no bearing on anything, so that they can, minutes later, impugn the character of millions of muslims everywhere and anywhere, by association.

(15,558 posts)All over DU Charlie Hebdo is being portrayed as a level playing field, an equal opportunity hater. I'm not all that familiar with their work, so this may be true, but from the examples I've seen so far there seems to be a slant or bias. I have seen the toilet paper illustration, but it doesn't really compare to the bullet-riddled Muslim, does it? Maybe I'm wrong, but it reminds me of Bill Maher's "equal" disdain for all religions.
