That doesn't mean that I have to be especially fond of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons.

Oh, and I've certainly never been accused of being a Jihadi or a lefty.

I don't have to like the cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo to defend the right to publish them.

this is a discussion board.

We may disagree on this board, but calling any longtime DUers "jihadis" is a bit over the top.

I won't alert, because these things are educational sometimes lol.

But someone else will. So see ya round.

You don't have to like the cartoons-- but "I am Charlie" is about their right to publish, and recognizing the horrible wrong of being murdered for your opinion. Any opinion.

I believe that everyone should stand with Charlie Hebdo as a statement that ideas, even ugly ones, should never be suppressed. However, I do not accept that anyone who disagrees with me on this point belongs on a "jihadi board". I will however support your right to make such an ugly and simplistic statement.

You support the right to say ugly statements, but if you disagree with someone saying "I am not Charlie", DU is the wrong place, a "jihadi board" is the right place?

I also don't think being a racist asshole is a death penalty offense.

I'm not going to beatify dead racists either.

Nuance. It's a thing. You should try it. Sometimes there are situations where everybody involved is a dick.

Conservatives and fundamentalists love things that are clear black and white

They don't deal well with complex problems that support competing views

google Jost et al on political conservative as motivated social cognition

People who are tolerant, a basic characteristic of liberalism, can grasp the idea that complex problems can contain more than one truism and truisms can seem to compete.

Pluralistic, multicultural societies depend on tolerance for coexistence.

The right of self-expression is essential to an open society but it depends upon tolerance

banning people for different beliefs is intolerance that in the end extinguishes opportunity for pluralism in what is expressed
