Sandy. We'd been without power for 10 days, and it was cold in the house. No cable, no internet, save for one of those networks you get with your cell phone. We did have natural gas, but the furnace has an electric starter.

We had linemen like the one in this picture in from all over the country, but I live back in the woods and am serviced by a single line, so I was last on the list.

One morning I was on my way to the local Panero for a coffee and I saw a brigade of linemen in their trucks, coming up the mountain. At that point, having been without electricity for over a week, I just burst into tears. What a sight that was!

Later in the day, when we saw that we would be having power soon, we threw a few hundred bucks together and went to the linemen to offer it as a special thanks. They refused it, saying they were getting paid plenty as it was. These particular linemen were from South Jersey.

We often call first responders and the military "heroes" for their service and in many cases they perform heroically for our society, but heroism is not restricted to those uniformed services. I believe that these workers that are out doing dangerous work, in often horrific conditions for us, should also be called heroes as I believe that is exactly what they happen to be.
