Hero cat saves baby from freezing to death

http://nypost.com/2015/01/15/hero-cat-saves-baby-from-freezing-to-death/

?w=840

Masha, a long-haired tabby cat, saved the life of a baby abandoned in the streets of Russia — after she climbed into the box he was discarded in and kept him warm, health officials said.

“She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” said Obninsk city resident Irina Lavrova. “Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”

“Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child,” Lavrova explained. “He was well-dressed with a little hat, and whoever left him here had even left a few nappies and some baby food.”

The baby was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he was given a checkup and declared fit and healthy, officials said. Since the child was found, Masha has been hailed as a hero by local residents — and she’s been reaping the benefits.

This "heroic" cat was once part of the family - mommy, daddy, little baby and cat.

Then one day when mommy and daddy were like 45 seconds late in delivering the opened can of cat food, the cat did them in.

The rest is as related in the news story itself.

she might have got in the box because:

(a) It's a box. Duh.
(b) The baby was the warmest thing around.

That's not to take away from her saving the baby's life. It's all about symbiosis. Mothering instincts may have had something to do with it, too.

His markings are just like hers. And he is the sweetest, most innocent cat. We thought he was a Maine Coon because he had the same markings as our MC older cat. But then his ruff showed up. The cat in the article is definitely a Siberian and obviously needs a great home with lots of love forever.

He was a kitten who was obviously on his last legs and my mother's dog loved to chase and sadly devour squirrels, which a light grey fluffy kitten definitely resemlbed. I don't know how he got lucky that day, but I was visiting and heard his crying. They are both great cats, and yes, I do think I'm not ready to outlive them because the death of my last cat nearly did me in. But since they found me, I couldn't say no. They are very sweet, not as bright as my almost-human Burmese, but fluffy and fun. Maybe some kitty might cross your path too.

You, my friend, are a true animal lover.

I've often thought about this problem and it applies to single folks, as well, young and old. As an animal rights & welfare supporter, I think it would be a good idea if we all registered with no kill shelters and had some kind of network of like people to make regular phone calls and be aware when one of us kicks the bucket so someone can and recuse our babies.

We are having that discussion right now. Our cat is 12. Our dog is heading for 10 and has a normal lifespan of 11-12.
After that, should we get other pets....when our life style has slowed us down a great deal.

to make matters worse..the Animal Shelter is 1/2 mile from the house.

who looked like an explosion in a mattress factory, hair all over the place and he looked enormous. The poor little guy would start to wilt in May, so I took him in to groomers for a buzz cut.

It was hilarious! There was no cat under all that fur, only about 7 pounds of him. He hated getting the cut, but he'd rocket around and bounce off the walls when he got home, he felt so great with all that heavy hair. He could also suddenly feel pets and scritches someplace besides his head and neck. The best part is that during the peak of shedding season, his fur was too short to mat up.

So don't discount hairy furballs. Often they're so little under the hair that they're quite manageable as lap candy.

He *WAS* a big boy, 18lbs. They did a "lion cut" on him when I took him to the groomer. That had to be the most humiliating thing I have ever seen done to an animal. I didn't ask them for that, they just did it.

Here is this cat with a bunch of hair on his face and neck, shaved back and tail except for a bob at the end and fluff at his paws.

He looked like a damn poodle.

I was embarrassed for him.
