'The Moon is a planet, darling,' Mr Mizrahi incorrectly tells her.

The show descends into a bizarre argument as the hosts try to work out what the Moon - Earth's only natural satellite - and the Sun are.

Ms Treacy says: 'Is the Moon really a planet? Don’t look at me like that. The Sun is a star ... Is the Sun not a star?'

Mr Mizrahi replies: 'I don’t know what the Sun is.'

Though outside of ancient math scholarship, the only one I can think of is astrology.

...Mizrahi may have just been poking fun at the host (who most definitely doesn't know what the hell the moon is). Mizrahi actually has a pretty dry sense of humor, so it wouldn't surprise me.

not that it matters very much. I don't do that network, and I rarely shop.

...but he's a judge on Project Runway All Stars, and I watch that a lot. He comes off as a pretty intelligent and -- at times -- comical guy, but his voice pretty much always stays the same, and he is certainly known to make some very dry, sarcastic remarks. So, I wouldn't be surprised if he was poking fun at the host regarding her comments about the moon, but I'm guessing he really didn't know what the sun was.

stuff they never think about. He probably knows everything that Paris Hilton ever wore, but no idea about science or - politics. That probably accounts for the stupid things some people say or why people don't vote - they train themselves to be ignorant of anything but t he one thing they love - their own celebrity.

If it wasn't a satellite of the Earth it would be unambiguously considered a planet.

It is also arguable that the Earth-Moon system is really a double planet system rather than a single planet with a large satellite.

It really depends on drawing some rather arbitrary distinctions as to how the term planet is defined, and that definition has changed in the past (e.g. demoting Pluto) and may well change again in the future.

Certain other celestial objects such as Ceres also fall into the well-it-depends category. In that particular case, the only thing stopping the classification of Ceres as a planet is that it has not cleared its orbit of other bodies. Due to this it has been classified as a "dwarf planet" (as opposed to "minor planet" of which there are something like half a million known to orbit the Sun). Then there are a whole bunch of objects that may or may not be dwarf planets, such as Quaroar, Sedna, Makemake, etc. It's actually quite a complex subject, with distinctions being fairly arbitrary and made more for convenience of discussion than anything else.

However, thinking the Moon could be a star is positively brain-damaged. There's no excuse for that and no way to make the statement anything but idiotic.
