GIBSON COUNTY, TENN. A Tennessee high school senior was denied entrance to her prom because of her dress, the JacksonSun.com reports.
Texanna Edwards, 18, was turned away at the door after school officials said her dress was offensive and inappropriate.
Edwards chose to wear a knee-length red dress that was decorated with white stars inside bright blue stripes, which school officials said resembled the controversial Confederate flag.
Gibson County School officials said a teacher, who was a prom sponsor, warned Edwards a couple months ago the dress might not be acceptable. She told Edwards to clear it with the principal first.
Eddie Pruett, who serves as director of schools for the county, said there have been recent race-related-issues and that school officials thought the dress would have caused more problems.

(65,616 posts)and total ignorance/arrogance in public (to be ridiculed and scorned) who am I to judge? I prefer people fuck up completely and be exposed for the morans they are instead of hide it from the public.
If she is so proud of her racist heritage...let her show it off!
RUSH was so proud of his 'Pigman speak' and look how well THAT turned out!
Yeah I know...she won't lose any sponsors, just probably some friends is my guess.
He looks as happy as a clam...

(82,849 posts)Ms. Edwards and her family will doubtless doff the prom dress for the victim's mantle, and try to sell a line about the horrible, terrible, no-good, very bad discrimination they have had to suffer. In anticipation of their self-pitying cry, I say, "Feed it to Sweeney."

(27,787 posts)That flag is an important symbol of Southern Confederate Heritage, and she turned it into a PROM DRESS??
Does she not understand what her Confederate ancestors did under that flag??
Now she's wearing it to a school dance ?? As if it was a decoration ... WTF!
And then ... what was going to happen to that great symbol of Confederate Heritage after the prom
... was it going to end up in a ball at the foot of the bed in some hotel room, as she gave her virginity to a prematurely balding high school senior (seriously, I'm almost 50 and I have more hair, but I digress).
This is so offensive to Confederate Civil war enthusiasts everywhere.

(18,640 posts)Having pointed that out to those who think there's an ongoing truce here like they have in Korea, I think this girl has a right to drape herself in her hateful ignorance.
She should also not look for protection from those who are offended by her political statement. I believe they can dress as Adolph and Eva if they wrongly think it'll appeal to people (we won that war too). I think the statement she's making is "I'm a loser", and I agree.
I have the right to enter a bar in an African American neighborhood and yell racist epithets at the customers if I choose, but I alone have to deal with the responsiblities my words bring. The police aren't about to accompany me and protect my "freedom of (hate) speech".
This is something Limbaugh and others complain about when they say "why can't I call them the "N-word?". "They call each other that." He's carped about that once a year since he's been on the air. What Rush overlooks is that he has every constitutional right to use that word on the radio, he just wisely chooses not to. The KKK uses it at every rally.

(38,958 posts)with which I completely agree. She does have the right to be a "loser" and to appear as one in what I believe to be a rather silly looking dress. I wonder if the other prom attendees have rights to not be offended by her actions & attire? Where does one draw the line? According to the article she had been told some 2 months prior that such a dress would most likely be unacceptable for entrance to the event and she elected to ignore that advice, wearing the dress, spending the money and such.
It also needs to be considered that she is a student at a high school which in some way sponsored this event. The school officials have some rights & responsibilities to both the individuals as well as the whole student body & the community at large. They needed to make a decision & I believe they decided wisely. She got her 15 minutes of fame, which one suspects was her ultimate goal and will now fade from the scene. Time will tell.

(3,626 posts)she spent $500 on the (custom-made) dress, her hair and makeup, and the young man's clothing. I say she spent about $450 too much, and bless her heart, had nothing left over to buy real shoes instead of flip-flops.
