Evil may so shape events that Caesar will occupy a palace and Christ a cross, but that same Christ arose and split history into A.D. and B.C., so that even the life of Caesar must be dated by his name. Yes, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” There is something in the universe which justifies William Cullen Bryant in saying, “Truth crushed to earth will rise again.”

13. Happy birthday MLK!

Happy Birthday by Stevie Wonder

You know it doesn't make much sense
There ought to be a law against
Anyone who takes offense
At a day in your celebration
'Cause we all know in our minds
That there ought to be a time
That we can set aside
To show just how much we love you
And I'm sure you would agree
It couldn't fit more perfectly
Than to have a world party on the day you came to be
Happy birthday to you

I just never understood
How a man who died for good
Could not have a day that would
Be set aside for his recognition
Because it should never be
Just because some cannot see
The dream as clear as he
That they should make it become an illusion
And we all know everything
That he stood for time will bring
For in peace our hearts will sing
Thanks to Martin Luther King

Why has there never been a holiday
Where peace is celebrated
All throughout the world
The time is overdue
For people like me and you
Who know the way to truth
Is love and unity to all God's children
It should be a great event
And the whole day should be spent
In full remembrance
Of those who lived and died for the oneness of all people
So let us all begin
We know that love can win
Let it out don't hold it in
Sing it loud as you can
Happy birthday to you

We know the key to unify all people
Is in the dream that you had so long ago
That lives in all of the hearts of people
That believe in unity
We'll make the dream become a reality
I know we will
Because our hearts tell us so

17. Thanks Cha. He wrote it when John McCain from Arizona

was among those opposing a national holiday for Dr. King. Opponents were saying this nonsense about how it would cost businesses too much money. What a crock. Then later McCain claimed that he didn't know much about Dr. King because he was in Vietnam when King was making history. Another crock!

Not many people can say a song they wrote helped a nation declare a national holiday - the great Stevie Wonder is one of them.

I think we should have a national holiday for federal voting days. Americans work too much as it is. It should be a paid holiday. Anyone who claims it would cost businesses too much money - well i say that's a crock! Voter enfranchisement is critical in a democracy. Far too many people are disenfranchised from voting because they have to work all day of voting. We should honor Dr. King by declaring voting days holidays! In my opinion.

18. Wow! Mahalo for that backstory.. I remember when McCain was a holdout for not celebrating

MLK Day in Arizona.. looking it up.. it was in 1983 and I was living in San Diego, CA.

Such an ignorant man.. and he really hasn't gotten any better.. look at the company he kept with the vote against the Holiday for MLK..

snip//

The six who cast votes against the national holiday are all Republicans: Sens. Richard Shelby (Ala.), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), John McCain (Ariz.) and Orrin Hatch (Utah), as well as Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (Wis.) and Hal Rogers (Ky.). Shelby cast his vote as a Democrat, before he switched parties.

http://thehill.com/homenews/229844-lawmakers-reflect-on-no-votes-on-mlk-day

Definitely we should have a National Holiday for Voting.. like Australia! Dr King would have loved that. That will happen when Dems go out to Vote in Midterms and we get a Dem Majority in Both Houses.

was going on in your country and the second mate that came to us. She was a Master Warant Officer and ended up housing two Americans. The second one was black from the deep south and he taught us so much, Mum said we had to wake up and was grateful he had come along to help us.

I know your country doesn't take kindly to draft dodgers and my Mum took them in and they were wonderful lads, they taught me so much...I'm crying again, I'm so sorry....

Randy came to her funeral. He spoke at the service saying how much he loved her shepherds pie and her understanding. We spoke alone and cried and he showed me pictures of his family and he thanked me for Joy (my Mum).

At the funeral when he went to the podium you would not believe the seniors whose mouths dropped when my brother Richard announced his brother Randy would now give honour...

They are both the dearest to me and my brothers....

70. Thanks for posting this Cha

Dr. Kings words in your post resonated with something I read from Thomas Merton last night. See Dr. Kings words this morning caused me to reflect on how those filled with wisdom are so close.

I started a thread in the interfaith group is you wish to read Merton's quote on hate and love.

71. Thank you, TexasProgressive! Just got back from your post

in Interfaith.. thank you for cross-posting. Thomas Merton and Dr King really did have a lot in common with both of them finding strength in love.

Coincidently we lost both of them in 1968.. but oh how their message lives on.
