Still would prefer Brokaw over most out there now.

(17,997 posts)He had a great series on PBS about justice for a while. Was really a great show. They dug deep into some stories that others just scratched the surface

(23,340 posts)I remember Pat Sajak as a local weatherman who was quite witty.
I remember Keith Morrison as another local news anchor.
I remember Harvey Levin, pre-TMZ, another local news reporter.

(17,997 posts)When news was news. Truly, the loss of real news is a big part of why things have gotten so bad

(23,340 posts)True in all local markets. It hasn't gotten any better or worse in the last 30 years, although you might not find the new reporters as cute as the old ones.
LA has an obsession with new helicopters. Great for drama.

(17,997 posts)So more like 40 - 50 years
Chicago local news was actual news done by actual journalists. Absolutely nothing like what is on today

(17,997 posts)Was reminded down the thread. So I take back the Brokaw part

(6,346 posts)Can anyone say Ray Rayner and Friends?
And yes.
It was Fahey, right?

(6,346 posts)Ahhhh...those were the days. He even looked trustworthy.

(17,997 posts)John Drury! Damn. When news was actually news.
Chicago had the best anchors and they were all actually reporters.
The world would be so different if news was still news.

(17,997 posts)Was trying to think of their names and just wouldn't come to me.
Yes, Huntley and Brinkley!
CincyDem
(6,346 posts)Had dinner with them every weekday evening for ages. IIRC they started out with a 15 minute broadcast ???? Anyone remember ?

(17,997 posts)But I remember the "good night. "
Who was on 5? They were on ABC, right?
CincyDem
(6,346 posts)Huntley/Brinkley were on 5 (nbc). That's all we had in our house.
Cronkite was on 9 (cbs) and Reynolds was on 7 (abc).
Pretty sure that's right but I've heard there are three things that start to go when you get old. Memory is the first and I can't remember the other two.
Me too. I can't believe I forgot all the bad stuff about Brokaw!
Frank Reynolds, he is another one. I didn't like him as much as some others but they're hands down better than most around today.
If you remember the other two, please let me know. Actually, if you remember what the other 2 things were about, please let me know.
What were we talking about?

(23,340 posts)My dad, WWII vet, lambasted Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" book as total bullshit.
My dad said there were all kinds of people serving, good, bad, and indifferent, and that this generation was no better than any other generation.
marym625
(17,997 posts)But I have also heard many that agreed with Brokaw.
I'm sure there's truth in both statements. We haven't faced something that huge since. Hopefully, we won't. But I think that was really what it was about. How they handled the adversity and attack on the nation
Sorry, I was a teen when he came around. Cute helped

Harry Reasoner! Was he national? I can't remember

(12,647 posts)Have you forgotten his relentless reports on Bill Ayers to help McCain during the 2008 campaign? Did you also forget his obvious support of Bush's Iraq war campaign? He was particularly nasty toward the antiwar protesters. Remember how defensive he got when McClellan's book came out accusing the press of not doing their job and asking the right questions in the lead up to the war?
Brokaw did the bidding of the oligarchy and was paid handsomely for it. He is a traitor to his profession and to the people who trusted him. He may have been decent in his early career, but then he became an elitist.
marym625
(17,997 posts)OK, I no longer miss him
But I miss the rest of them
Wow, I really did forget all that. My second wishful dementia today
