It was an ad-libbed line toward the end of the speech. But President Barack Obamas stiff rebuke to Republican hecklers quickly became the takeaway moment of Tuesdays State of the Union address. I have no more campaigns to run, Obama said, prompting sarcastic applause. In response, Obama shot back, I know because I won both of them. It might have been easy to miss, since network pundits perhaps smarting from Obamas remarks criticizing cable news outlets earlier in the speech largely ignored the remark.

I love the new "change," from defense to offense! And I "hope" the president does not let up.
I approve of his message!

(62,451 posts)the Obama wit.
Obama has a marvelous wit and can crack some really funny lines. But with Republicans and 99% of the press ready to come down hard on anything he says he has had to be very careful about what he says.
It is a damn shame. One of my greatest memories is of the JFK wit and how he used it to diffuse situations or to cut an opponent off at the knees. We get inklings that Obama has quite the with also, but has been very constrained. Adding wit to the office makes a world of difference. Republicans took that from us.

(12,151 posts)It was early on and they were fiesty. They started sniggering and giggling to themselves as the sarcastic "applause" rose after he said he had no more campaigns to run. Then Obama's follow-up -- "Because I won both of them" -- without skipping a beat. BAM! Back on their heels, and laughter rose again, now from the other side. The chortlers became the chortlees. It was like a snarky tide crashing on the beach, then swiftly rolling back out as gravity reversed.
And he smiled. Not ugly, just incontrovertible. Just snarky enough. BAM again.
Whatever else anyone thinks, no President has been more of the wrong person to take verbal shots at one-on-one (or entire-Republican-Congress-on-one). Ask, Mitt "Please proceed, Governor" Romney.
BAM.

(733 posts)After the "you lie" shout-out, he must have known that the repubs were just waiting for a chance to disrepect him. Is that called trolling?
And the repubs are in such a bubble, they don't even realize how their disrespect diminishes their stance, views, whatever shred of respectability they may have.
What we are seeing is the dissolution of the Republican party under the pressures of a furthering of the democratic ideals since the '60's. This dissolution is inevitable, since we can't go back in time, and yet it will be very painful. It will involve fear-mongering, isolationism, bigotry (circling the wagons). Though I hate to bring up analogies to Germany in the 20's, we are seeing the response of a people who have lost their faith in their government, are given a scapegoat, and try to turn the clock back to some imaginary golden age. In Germany the government, in their fear of communism, fell in with the Nazis.
Our problem is that, in our fear of Islam, we will fall in with the conservatives.

(7,393 posts)Don't get me wrong, Obama has done a lot of great things. But this suddenly populist BS is too little, too late. He sure didn't give a fuck when he was giving the banks one break after another while taxpayers and homeowners paid the price.
