Everybody MattersI want our actions to tell every child in every neighborhood, your life matters, and we are committed to improving your life chances - as committed as we are to working on behalf of our own kids. I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift, that we’re a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen -- man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino, Asian, immigrant, Native American, gay, straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability. Everybody matters. I want them to grow up in a country that shows the world what we still know to be true: that we are still more than a collection of red states and blue states; that we are the United States of America. they don't get it. It was not. So what the gop won't pass anything? We already know that.. but this is to tell America and the World what we Dems are all about and to set us up for 2016..and whomever the candidate is would be smart to build on it.

The jobs destroyed by Obama's three free trade agreements signed so far, with the TPP, TTIP, and more in the works?
The elderly who'll be cold and/or hungry if Obama gets the Social Security cuts he seeks? The millions who've lost their homes because the White House refuses to implement the programs they've promised, probably because it would make bankers grumpy? The young black men whom the DOJ won't protect from unwarranted police violence? Talk. Is. Cheap. |

48. They've redefined "homeless" so the districts get more money--that's what is happening here.
If you are living with granny, or in Auntie's basement apartment, you are now considered "homeless" by those looking for federal funding/grant money. If you are living in "temporary shelter" -- for example, a hotel room, often in a facility largely given over to families without permanent housing--you are regarded as homeless.
So yeah, whatever. When I was a kid, if you lived with your grandma, you lived with your grandma. That was your home. It didn't make you homeless if a relative took you into their home--it made you "living with a relative" and maybe your parent(s) weren't thrilled, but you had a roof over your head. If you lived in a hotel or a short-term rental, you lived in a crappy situation, but you also had a roof over your head, a place to receive mail. That said, if grant money depends on counting "homelessness" as having to live with relatives, or in a transitional housing situation, then that's the new definition. Easy to make those figures go way up when you fiddle with the definitions. This is touched upon deep in your source: The situation could be troublesome because the data released by the education department show an increasing number of homeless youth are living in hotels or motels, or doubled-up with friends or relatives. The percentage of homeless youth living in hotels or motels jumped by 9.6 percent from the 2010-11 school year to the 2012-13 school year, while the percentage of homeless students who were unsheltered - sleeping on the streets - decreased by 30.6 percent. The number of students living with friends or family also increased by 4.4 percent during the same time.
You can see how the topic is wrestled to the ground (if your home is "inadequate" then you can be counted as homeless) here: http://www.homelesschildrenamerica.org/pdf/full_report/appendix_1.pdf This Report Card uses the broader definition of homelessness as contained in the education subtitle of the McKinney-Vento Act, Title X, Part C, of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and includes those who are living in motels and those who share living situations temporarily because of loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons. This definition more accurately reflects the reality of family homelessness by defining “‘homeless children and youth’ as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.” The term includes children and youth who are:1 • Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason (sometimes referred to as doubled-up); • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative accommodations; • Living in emergency or transitional shelters; • Abandoned in hospitals; • Awaiting foster care placement; • Using a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings; • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and • Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances described above. |

58. I am TELLING you that homelessness was first redefined by NCLB, and
districts, counties and states have not all gotten on board with the new criteria all at the same time. This is why the numbers are going UP, even though actual "on the street" homelessness is plummeting as these agencies begin to apply the new guidelines.
You can read as easily as anyone else, and you've got Google--go do the work if you really want to learn. This was discussed at length here on DU--before you arrived, I imagine. You can find the discussions in the archives if you're really interested. |

85. These are very old, very lame arguments being dragged out, all they're doing is derailing.
All heat--no light. And most of the heat is coming from GOP-friendly sources!!
It's so easy to tear down, and so much harder to lift up. Those who can, do, and those who cannot, or will not, will post garbage on the internet to try to make people as miserable as they are. It's a sad, sad situation. "I'm not happy, ergo, you must not be happy either!!" I feel sorry for people who are like that--imagine having to go through life looking for happy little threads on DU to shit on, just to get that all-important FEEEEEEEDBACK!!!!! Because making people cry, or get irritated, or get upset, or be saddened...why, that's IMPORTANT!!!!!!! It makes the shitter feel ..... ALIVE!!!!!!! Wonder what people did before the internet? Make prank phone calls? Then Caller ID ruined their fun!!! Damn the bad luck!!!! I'll throw in one of these, ![]() |

91. Next to last paragraph is THE definition of a concern troll. Or just a plain troll.
It's behavior, not the subtext used that determines the act. It's pretty stale, textbook trolling by means of derailing.
I don't respond when I see propositions put forth easily disproved by facts, links and civics repeatedly to a poster. I've stopped doing the work for such posters, as it takes considerable time, such as the last one that got dozens of rebuttals. That was just one instance of this. The poster did not respond to most of the answers, nor admit to the error, which might be understandable from being a bit embarrassed or confused, despite doubling down. But jumped to another thread to spread the same misinformation gathered from RW memes. That said quite a bit about him. He had recieved a well deserved thrashing, as delicately doled out as the truth can be safely administered. I'm glad you're capable of doing so within the bounds of civility, after a while, I just want to say: ![]() But I don't bother to school anyone here. Here is my ![]() ![]() |

121. First sign of derailment or utter cluelessness, use this to alert those that their posts are:
![]() A self-aware, cognizant person who read the OP and not the names, would realize this thread is clearly a celebration of the most cherished American values that have brought people from around the globe to live here. They believe, they hope and they do make their lives better. OP is not a policy discussion, but meant to announce a return to the values BushCo discarded as he shredded the American conscience. He deliberately gave democracy such a bad name that he empowered fascists and bigots. Now some people will prefer fascism or theocracy. That's the end result of BushCo's acts and it was intentional. Let Obama show these posters they are OFF TOPIC. Derailing by not commenting on the OP, denied people a chance to talk about Equality for all Americans and for would be Americans. The posters that have derailed are refusing to allow a discussion of the beauty of inclusiveness fostered by the Constitution and Amendments, and that reflects badly on them. But what Obama said still speaks to a beautiful American Ideal. Have a good night. |

130. Those values need to be discussed. The love they express resonate around the planet:
In English: Yes I know My love, that you and I Are together briefly For just a few moments In silence As we look out of our windows And listen To the sky And to a world That's awakening And the night is already far away Already, far away Look at this world Spinning with us Even in the dark Look at this world Spinning for us Giving us hope and some Sun, sun sun My love, you are you my love I hear your voice, And I listen to the sea. It sounds just like your breathing And all the love you want to give me This love That is there, hidden Hidden among the waves All the waves in the world Just like a boat that... Look at this world Spinning with us Even in the dark Look at this world Spinning for us Giving us hope, And some sun, sun, sun, Some sun, sun, sun. Look at this world Spinning with us Giving us some sun, Mighty sun Mighty sun Mighty sun http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/andrea_bocelli/canto_della_terra.html And use the illustration above wherever you please, it's a good meme for this situation. Not Manny's though he believes it is. You are right, no real question in my Op, yet you could at least comment on it.
Neither you or Manny came here to comment on what I posted. You both came here to be rude, crude, DEMANDING and condescending on an Op about children and this President. Everybody Matters
I want our actions to tell every child in every neighborhood, your life matters, and we are committed to improving your life chances - as committed as we are to working on behalf of our own kids.I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift, that we’re a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen -- man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino, Asian, immigrant, Native American, gay, straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability. Everybody matters. I want them to grow up in a country that shows the world what we still know to be true: that we are still more than a collection of red states and blue states; that we are the United States of America. President Barack Obama, State of the Union, January 20, 2015 Talk...meet walk. Do you have that much of a problem about what Obama stated here? If that is so I feel so very sorry, so very sorry for you. He said... I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift, that we’re a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen -- man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino, Asian, immigrant, Native American, gay, straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability. And you have no comment on that? Your concern is not for these people only Manny? You both came here to destroy my Op. I hope you are happy with yourself.

151. Why should you have responded?
Maybe because a discussion board is about discussion, and not just posting unquestioned monologues?
Or maybe because after you demanded that Manny give you information to back up his comments, and he did so, the adult thing to do would be to acknowledge that information and take a moment to at least attempt a lucid rebuttal? If you make a post (outside of the BOG), expect more than just clapping and happy emoticons and various versions of "you said it!11!!". If you do not understand why you should have 'given Manny the time of day' after you demanded that information, then you don't understand how two-way discussion works. And by the way, I don't see where MADem 'wiped the floor with' Manny; quite the opposite, in fact. I do see a bit of the usual giddy high-fiving from the usual giddy high-fivers, and a whole lot of serious goal post moving, but that's about it. |

181. Excellent reply Marr. Not everyone agrees that Obama's actions match his words
when it comes to everyone mattering. Right or wrong, raising that issue in a thread that quotes Obama talking about everyone mattering is perfectly appropriate on a discussion board like DU. Manny did that and got tons of hate from the usual haters. The funny thing is that sheshe2 asked for him to back up his initial claims and then responded with outrage when he tried to do so. He was accused of being a bully and a hater, but Manny was not the one who went for the throat.

55. I don't believe them and wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them, and you shouldn't either.
How soon some forget?
AARP lost MILLIONS of members over their donut hole position. I don't personally know a single Democrat over the age of 65 who believes their bullshit. I do know people who remember how badly that donut hole fucked them over, though--and they're out the other end of it and still have not forgotten. Now me, I'm a lucky so-and-so...I get my prescriptions, when I need them, on a military base for free. However, I've been in the drugstore and seen the stricken looks of customers asked to fork over hundreds for a prescription...so fuck AARP and their donut hole--they are lobbying tools of Big GOP Pharma and the Bill Frist Medical Industry. The woman who is the face of that organization got her start as a Reagan appointee at HUD, and the GOP has been very, very good to her, pushing her up the ladder and in the system until she broke out as a glorified lobbyist for business--not people. She's dancing with the ones what brung her, make no mistake. Consider the source....ALWAYS. I sure do. Here--take a walk down memory lane--can't believe you, of all people, could forget this so easily: http://prospect.org/article/seduction Democrats didn't know about Hansen's e-mail. In fact, when recently told about it, one Democratic staffer expressed shock and said that AARP "double-crossed us." But the GOP's business allies saw the e-mail. The White House sent it out to key Republican lobbyists and such groups as the National Association of Manufacturers and the Business Roundtable to make sure they knew that AARP was still on board. Over the next weeks, AARP leaders worked closely with House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to craft a final bill. It passed the House on November 22 in the early morning hours, when GOP leaders left the vote open for a totally unprecedented three hours after they were initially unable to get the votes needed for passage. Three days later the bill passed the Senate and, on December 8, President Bush signed it into law, which AARP hailed as "an important step toward fulfilling a longstanding promise to older and disabled Americans." Suddenly, the AARP wasn't looking like such a liberal Democratic ally. For many Democrats, AARP's support for last November's Medicare prescription-drug bill came as a total shock. Not only could the law cause millions of seniors to lose more generous employer and state-coordinated drug benefits while providing only limited help to others; it is a major step toward the Republican Party's goal of privatizing Medicare and decimating employer-based health coverage. To those few who were really watching closely, however, AARP's actions were not a surprise at all, and the group's conversion was anything but sudden. The story of the Republicans' seduction of AARP unfolded over nearly a decade, as GOP leaders cajoled, seduced, and occasionally threatened the group's leaders into changing their ways and accepting the reality of Republican congressional control. Today, with bad policy already law, the stakes are incredibly high, as regulations to implement the law loom, along with bills to repeal some of its worst aspects. And they will grow higher still if President Bush is re-elected and Republicans can continue toward their ultimate goals. As the battle to preserve Medicare unfolds, Democrats who were surprised by the bill's passage last November should understand a key part of the story, which has not been told, of how it happened. Possibly the least surprised man in Washington last fall was Newt Gingrich. The former House speaker, who told a Blue Cross conference in 1995 that Medicare as a "government monopoly plan" was going to "wither on the vine" in favor of a Republican-designed "free-market plan," has spent the last nine years manipulating AARP. I'm pretty confident that if Elizabeth Warren had been in the Senate when they were ramming that bill through, she would have had something to say about it--AND AARP...! |

So long as we're "defying" here, I defy YOU to just do the decent thing, and stop with the snarking, the sniping, the childish "gotchas" that aren't (or are only to the low-information reader) and the incessant and totally pointless and divisive thread derailing. You took a nice, positive thread with an uplifting message and you pretty much ruined it with a load of "Yeah, but"-ing. If you want to fling invective, why not do it in one of your protected groups, where people who know the score can't answer back? Is that "no fun" or something? Why do you have to always crap on the positive threads? The chained CPI shit didn't happen--but you want everyone in an uproar about it, because that's what makes you happy, I guess. Why didn't you do that, Manny? Why not drag out your rightwing AARP sources and refight a battle that is long dead, hmmmm, in a thread of your OWN, instead of stomping all over this 'un? No fun? 102. Kicking for the people that were mentioned here...
I want our actions to tell every child in every neighborhood, your life matters, and we are committed to improving your life chances - as committed as we are to working on behalf of our own kids.
For every child that a poster wanted to deny their voice and their heart. For every man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino, Asian, immigrant, Native American, gay, straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability. He wanted to make it about his voice not ours. I say no! You will not set my course. You will not derail me. You will not derail us! |

For me. I don't have a lot of patience these days, to much going on to suffer fools gladly. When someone comes on a thread 21 times to trash it, that really stinks. Did I post a wildly controversial thread? No. I posted about I want our actions to tell every child in every neighborhood, your life matters, and we are committed to improving your life chances - as committed as we are to working on behalf of our own kids. I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift, that we’re a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen -- man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino, Asian, immigrant, Native American, gay, straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability. I suggest that you start sending them a PM of every instance where you feel harassed. This thread is a really blatant example and so hopefully they've already seen it. He's outdone himself in this thread. One thing certain people here (so often men) don't seem to understand is that people should be allowed to post things without being constantly stalked and harassed by the same people. Disagreement, even passionate disagreement, is not the issue. It's the following, personal attacks, derailment and flat out bullying that goes on that's the problem. When someone tells you to leave them alone JUST FUCKING DO IT. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea if you just completely disengaged with Manny as well. No responses to him, ever. No matter how tempting his ever present flame bait may be. Now, whether the admins will actually DO something with your PMs is the actual issue. But even if they don't do anything at the moment, we all know that they keep that kind of information handy. |

Whenever you see that person's name, ignore the ever loving hell out of him. Don't even talk around him. Treat him like he's not even there. And as you and most of this web site already knows, you will be missing absolutely NOTHING if you do just that.
I'm sure he and his pals are laughing up a storm that they got your post hidden up thread. And it's a shame that had to happen. But personally, if I had to choose between making such a spectacular ass out of myself all in the name of making sure that everyone here knows how much I hate the DEMOCRATIC president of the United States on a DEMOCRATIC board or take a hidden post, there really wouldn't be a contest. |

209. I've got something to say about the hidden post...
I was on the jury for it. The only person at DU who got sheshe's post hidden was sheshe. The alert was for the accusation of racism aimed at two DUers in the thread. So I went and read the post it was in response to and found nothing. I read through the entire thread and found nothing. But I did see a lot of nastiness, accusations of stalking, bullying and all sorts of dramatic stuff aimed at one DUer in the thread. So it was an easy hide in the end. I don't have a dog in this particular fight, not being American and liking some people on both 'sides' of the bickering, and there's more than a few posts in this thread I'd have voted to hide if they were alerted on and I was on a jury for them, but a simple solution for folk who don't want their posts hidden is to play nice and not make things personal and nasty when the person they're replying to is discussing an issue and not personalities...

214. Hi there Number23. I noticed in that thread that you referred to my post to you from this thread...
My post from this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10026119475#post209
and yr post about it in that thread complaining about a hide: Someone "explained" why they voted to hide your post in your other thread but I can't be bothered to reply.
I'm not sure that your accusations of racism were appropriate for that particular thread but there is no doubt in my mind that the person(s) you directed that accusation to were spot on. You would be hard pressed to find a minority poster on DU that has not expressed those same sentiments towards that individual. And I have no doubt that's the ONLY reason your post was alerted on and certainly not because it was untrue. http://www.democraticunderground.com/125554244#post86 Firstly, I didn't 'explain' - I read a few posts from you in this thread talking about the hide and claiming that DUers saw things as you did. So I said what I thought as a juror with no allegiances to one 'side' or the other when I looked back through the posts leading up to the alerted post. I posted in good faith and I thought you and I got on well, so I'm not sure why you couldn't be bothered to reply. Not that yr obligated to reply, but usually when people have nothing to say they don't say anything rather than going to a Meta thread somewhere else and announcing it there. The response to you in that thread was strange as well. I can only remember one exchange with the DUer who replied to you and it wasn't unpleasant so I'm not sure where they're coming up with that stuff about me disliking them. That appeared to be a rather random accusation of lack of objectivity. Even if I did dislike them, I'd treat them the way I treat other DUers I actually dislike when I'm called up to a jury for one of their posts. I'd do what I do with every alerted post I'm on a jury for. I'd look at the post and if what they've said is imo worthy of being hidden, I'd vote to hide. If it's not, I'd vote to leave. There's only been once when I backed out of a jury because I decided my dislike was going to cloud my judgement, but I hated that DUer with a passion, which is a rarer than rare thing for me... Now I have a question for you. In yr post from that thread you claim that Manny and Marr are racists. While I don't tend to read many threads on domestic US politics, I have read enough from both of them to be surprised by that accusation. So, could you supply some links to where they're saying racist things? Something I didn't get after reading this thread and that thread was after all the stuff along the lines of 'LEAVE ME ALONE!!! DON'T BULLY ME!!!' and being told by several DUers to use the ignore function if another DUer upsets them, why I was reading through that other thread and they're still, over 24 hrs later, talking about Manny. I dunno, my advice would be to get over it and move on because that sort of behaviour doesn't really support their claims of being bullied and stalked. Note to self: don't post in these drama-fest threads anymore. It makes me feel like the Meta forum's come back ![]() |

Hateful negative comments in this thread completely destroyed by the truth. I'm pretty sure there's a script because the lines are so similar. And the "logic." They are such a bore.
