House Republicans recently proposed cuts to nutrition assistance that will kick 280,000 low-income children off automatic enrollment in the Free School Lunch and Breakfast Program. Those same kids and 1.5 million other people will also lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamp benefits) that help them afford food at home.
Ten years worth of these nutrition cuts could be prevented for the price of one year of tax cuts on 3,340 multimillion dollar estates that House Republicans are protecting in their budget.
On April 18 the House Agriculture Committee passed a bill cutting over $33 billion from SNAP over the next decade.

How can any Republican be allowed to skate on this 'Comfort the comfortable and afflict the afflicted' issue? This is cruelty, plain and simple and there's no way they can turn this sow's ear into a silk purse. I'm so mad about this, just livid.
On edit: I am indebted to kpete for posting this first in LBN. Neglected to attribute it when first posting.

(14,180 posts)pointed out in the thread about Gandhi, Hitler and the efficacy of non-violence as a tactic, because sociopaths only understand and respond to domination and submission.
Thanks for the suggested title change. This OP was intended to be a personal vent of mine, a Munch-like scream to my brothers and sisters at DU.

(16,230 posts)but it's becoming more and more difficult for people to believe that they're sincere in that belief, and easier and easier to believe that in their hearts they are acting out of spite towards certain groups of people.
It should by now be obvious to any reasonably intelligent and intellectually honest person that trickle down doesn't work.

(11,867 posts)... and some of them appear to be, it's still a belief that's been proved false by actual data.

(14,180 posts)despicable as attacks on either group are. It's another thing entirely to attack demographic groups that have no way to defend themselves.
That's why I call it cruelty (of the sociopathic variety).

(1,076 posts)this makes me sick to my stomach. Taking food away from people and spending the money on weapons or to give tax breaks to the rich is not a budget decision, it's a crime. Unbelievable these people.

(2,759 posts)To propose and actually believe that it's right to make poor people starve so that the most well off can become even wealthier.

Un-friggin-believable. Jonathan Swift (of "A Modest Proposal" fame) is surely stirring in his grave right about now.

(11,689 posts)Republicans are just following the best science. See if you keep cramming something (money) into a smaller and smaller space, it eventually reaches a tipping point where KA-BOOM! it explodes and showers down on everybody.

(3,575 posts)This reasoning is to general and could be applied to any spending cut.

(14,180 posts)will be cut immediately (as soon as this budget is enacted if it is enacted) from the free school lunch program?
kctim
(3,575 posts)I am saying that you could take ANY of the proposed cuts and say they want to protect the "tax cuts on 3,340 multimillion dollar estates" instead of helping those people the cuts affect.
I guess I could be reading the wrong bill. Is this a bill that specifically cuts only this program in order to keep those tax cuts? Or is this the bill that makes cuts to illegal immigrant services, pensions, food stamps etc... but does not raise those estate taxes?
coalition_unwilling
(14,180 posts)I think there are multiple budgetary bills before the House at any given moment in time. In the interest of reducing the budget deficit, this bill proposes to cut government food assistance over a 10-year period, including immediately kicking 280,000 kids off the rolls of the free school lunch program. However, there are other ways to reduce the deficit, such as a bill that would increase taxes on millionaires.
Net-net: Republicans don't really care about reducing the deficit. Or they care less about hungry children than they care about reducing the deficit while leaving richy-riches untouched.
kctim
(3,575 posts)and to me, they will not, because it is a general opinion that can be applied to any of the other cuts. IMO, only opinionated talk shows like Maddow, Ed etc... will promote this.
This is nothing more than disagreeing on ways to reduce the deficit, not a heartless attempt to starve kids.
coalition_unwilling
(14,180 posts)will remove 280,000 children from the free school lunch program. That much is indisputable. DUers who teach in school will tell you that the children who receive this food aid are not freeloaders and need the nutrition that the programs provide. So I beg to differ that it does, in a sense, starve children to appease the bitter God of deficit reduction.
kctim
(3,575 posts)is why I said it is too general of an assumption for the big media to focus on.
On ANY issue where there are cuts and no tax increases, you can say people hate those affected by the cuts and love those who they did not raise taxes on.
Do we hate our soldiers because we want cuts in defense? Of course not. That is just a false talking point pushed by right-wingers. Big media however just reports cuts to defense.

(14,180 posts)CBS is owned by Viacom (or they used to be. I haven't kept up with M&A activity among the Big 3 networks). I'm not holding my breath. You can bet, though, that if the unemployment rate creeps up by even 0.1% they'll be all over it, laying blame for it at Obama's doorstep (and I'm no big Obama fan by any means). I don't even bother with the MSM any more, as their coverage is so predictable and contemptible.

I grew up hungry and poor (on a farm no less), so I may be a little more sensitive to the childhood hunger issue than most. But this just takes the cake (npi) in its utterly despicable cruelty.

(37,573 posts)many people self identify as Republicans. They are registered Republicans, just like I am a registered Democrat. Thus, I self-identify as a Democrat.
Thus, if somebody at FR titled a post "One reason I hate Democrats" they would basically be making the post read "One reason I hate people like hfojvt".
See, you are talking about the perfidity not of Republicans (like hfojvt's brother, or more especially his brother-in-law) but of Republican POLITICIANS.
Now, you may say, "but you ignorant fool, those Republican voters are supporting those Republican politicians". Yes, they are, and maybe that qualifies them somehow for their minimum daily allowance of hate. But I think it is kinda hard to convince them to stop supporting those Republican politicians by starting your argument (or your sales pitch) with "I hate you".
Hate Boehner, hate Ryan, hate Gingrich and Romney and Santorum (and even Paul, oh my). Hate Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and even Tony Snow (even though he's dead). But don't hate the average Republican voter. Unless you would rather fight than convince them to switch.

(14,180 posts)existential pain for my DU brothers and sisters, so was not as cautious with my words.
Just so you know, though, I have met Republican non-politicians who see nothing wrong with kicking 280,000 kids off the rolls of the free school lunch program. Just like I met Republican non-politicians who said that the people who didn't leave New Orleans before Katrina struck 'deserved' what happened to them.
But you're right. Not all Republicans subscribe to those views. I still hate Republicans though

(14,180 posts)assume the person posting it neglected to use a sarcasm icon. The argument was that it's better for children to be hungry and free than to be imprisoned (in school) and fed. I thought the person posting it might have been engaging in some Swiftian satire beyond my meager abilities to suss out.

(14,180 posts)distinguishes between Republican politicians and Republican registrants and I think his point has some merit. To wit, how many Republcian Party members would remain in the party if they were fully aware of what their party leaders are up to, i.e., hurting the defenseless? My response though is that I think the sociopathic trait is now a defining feature of many Republican Party members and not just its political leadership cadre.
