Mississippi Wouldn't Allow This Teacher to Show Kids How to Use a Condom. His Simple Solution Is Brilliant.
In Mississippi, where education laws require "stressing" abstinence, teachers are prohibited from "any demonstration of how condoms or other contraceptives are applied." Nonetheless, 76 percent of Mississippi teenagers report having sex before the end of high school, and a third of babies in the state are born to teenage mothers. One teacher came up with a creative solution for imparting some wisdom to students about condomswatch it below.

(525 posts)has to teach sex education and cannot demonstrate how a condom is put on.
An American law that prohibits a teacher from performing "any demonstration of how condoms or other contraceptives are applied" to teenagers.
Completely disgusting. From what moral code does this inane law arise? What greater good is served by this? It's a harmful and repressive attitude, which doesn't even begin to address the importance of topic to the health and well-being of these Americans.

(4,078 posts)The same "moral code" that forced every single abortion clinic in Mississippi to shut down!
So, they prohibit teaching contraceptive use, and then outlaw (effectively) abortion. AND THEN THEY WONDER WHY THEIR TEEN PREGNANCY RATE IS SO HIGH!!!????
Idjuts. Ugh.

(10,044 posts)But this is the type of story that South Park does such a wonderful job on (I know, preposition at the end) . . .
When I can't find any good news programs, I put on South Park. They are first in "explaining" everything in the news to the kids, and most of the trash talk comes from their innocence....
Can't wait to see this episode when there is one.

(6 posts)I think the main message is more than putting on a condom, it is about giving permission to use a condom when having sex, and then permission to have fun during the whole process, plus letting TEENAGERS know how to do it effectively. Teens generally do not know much other than what comes to them in conversations with other teens. So to have this clearly intelligent and perceptive man show them in a totally non-threatening and subversive way is a true delight.
wavesofeuphoria
(525 posts)Especially for girls. Girls need to know how a condom is placed on a penis and should be able to do it properly and able to see it was done properly.
A sock isn't the same material, nor is it rolled up and stored in a small wrapper. Doesn't have a reservoir on the tip.
If you want a substitute, put that real condom on a fake penis - hell, a freakin' cuke or carrot will suffice.
The "idea" of condoms does not reduce pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, actually using and touching and placing the damn thing on before intercourse is rather important to its function.

(17,796 posts)that's what he's trying to get around. Think he did a great job, just should have mentioned-always use a fresth clean sox when engaging in shoe activity.

(525 posts)And I'm saying that is a stupid law.
It's really not that cute when you think of how important the information is.
I'm in no way critical of the teacher ... only pointing out the absurdity and danger of the law regarding the actually purpose of condoms.
daleanime
(17,796 posts)the law is very stupid.
Moonwalk
(2,322 posts)...but what you said and how you said it came across that way. The video is, frankly, brilliant and wonderfully subversive in its simplicity given the stupid law he's trying to get around. Whatever it's flaws or inconsistencies, it's a whole lot better than nothing, which is exactly what the law wants. Nothing.
If you're critical of the law, don't criticize the video, and by extension, the teacher who made it. Say that the law makes it so that the video can't be completely accurate. Which we all agree is true, and we all agree is sad, aggravating and wrong.
wavesofeuphoria
(525 posts)I did not criticize the teacher at all. I was criticizing the law and its outcomes. I did it in the way I wanted to talk about it. There are numerous ways and perspectives to do so. Your admonishments have been noted.

(525 posts)And I didn't even ask either of you about your opinions of me and my attitude or how I say something.
I admonished a fucking stupid law that harms people.
You jovial blokes decided I was the one needing admonishment.
Let me note something else for you.
Civil discourse means discussing and criticizing and arguing about ideas, opinions, beliefs.
Admonishing someone on how they should be talking or thinking ("you should have said" or how they should be feeling (hypersensitive or negative) is ... typical.
You guys win. Thanks.
Thor_MN
(11,843 posts)I noted that you have a crappy attitude.
Ever stop to think that the teacher's message might be only for male students? That the female students have a different class? No, you came in and crapped all over a positive message in response to a stupid law, because it doesn't contain what you want it to contain.

not rolling. And their third mistake is not pulling out immediately afterwards; allowing the penis to shrink and the condom to leak.
All of these contribute to condom failure and possible pregnancy.

(2,529 posts)Not to use the same condom more than once. Never use two condoms at the same time. Never use oil base lubricants like Vaseline. It's shocking for me when I look back to my teen years and remember how condoms were often reused by washing them out in the sink. Of course, naive country kids had all kinds of misinformation. Just the general stuff. You can't get pregnant if you do it standing up or if you take a bath in warm water within a few hours. Boys can't get a girl pregnant if they drink four glasses of milk before they do it. Probably because they'll be too sick to their stomachs.

(33,982 posts)high school, student members of an outreach group called Natural Helpers did the condom demonstration (Next time get a zucchini without spines, derp) instead of the teacher.
I didn't think much of it at the time, but this was 20 years ago, and while Seattle is awesomely progressive, now that I think back on it, it might have been a federal funding requirement/end run around rules. This was back in the days when Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders got thrown out the airlock for daring to encourage positive sexual health and de-stigmatization of masturbation and contraceptives.
Fuck Bill Clinton forever, for firing her. Really the only thing that man ever did that actually pissed me off.
Tsiyu
(18,186 posts)That pissed me off, too.
Especially when we eventually learn that the sex shamers are actually sexual deviants themselves.
NO ONE should let the Moral Elite shame them when it comes to sex. The Moral Elite are having more sex than any of us, all while telling us WE shouldn't be having any.
Like anti-abortion Repuke Scott DesJarlais, who forced his own wife to have abortions when it was expedient for him, but who doesn't want anyone else to have access to safe, legal abortion.
Like Limpballs, who got caught with viagra after screwing god knows what poor people on some island somewhere, slut shaming? Really? And you've had FOUR WIVES, Rush? Really, you scum-sucking bag of pus? You want to play the Moral Elite with YOUR record?
Sex shamers are ALL HYPOCRITES so NO one should be shamed by any of them.

IronLionZion
(45,380 posts)because shoe activity isn't always planned in advance, sometimes you might not be able to go out and buy some socks when you're in the mood. It's OK for girls to carry socks as well, and sooner or later its good to learn about girl socks which feel totally awesome but are harder to find.
Girl socks can be bought online, like Amazon.
But whatever you do, DON'T count on lambskin socks or the free socks they give away at planned parenthood.
F4lconF16
(3,747 posts)Because that's a serious issue. People depend on those. The ones given out at the health centers I've seen were all regular brands, so should there be something people should looking out for?

(3,747 posts)Genuinely surprised. Their creativity in plumbing the depths of idiocy astounds me.
IronLionZion
(45,380 posts)If they give reputable brands like Durex or Trojan or Lifestyles, then that's great. But the small oval shaped ones they gave out when I was in school 10 years ago were really bad.
And I think it's about lowest cost, not about abortions.
IronLionZion
(45,380 posts)always look for latex or polyisoprene as the material. The thin oval shaped ones are really bad and I wouldn't count on those.
female condoms are more expensive and have a learning curve, but are worth it IMO.
F4lconF16
(3,747 posts)Haven't tried the female condoms--what particular advantages do they have, why are they worth it?
IronLionZion
(45,380 posts)both partners feel more during the activity. And they are generally polyisoprene, in case one partner has latex allergies or sensitivities. They also protect a larger surface area. There are videos online to show how to put it in. There's a ring that attaches to the woman's cervix.
Many women don't like the chafing that comes from male condoms sometimes, even with lube it can be uncomfortable for some.

When knights were bold
And rubbers weren't invented
They wrapped a sock
Around their cock
And babies were prevented
