State officials shut down shrimping in Gulf amid scientists finding deformities and horrifying creatures Media attributes closure to lesions, then retracts
Title: Looming Crisis: Officials Close Gulf Waters to Shrimping As Reports of Deformed Seafood Intensify
Source: Stuart H. Smith
Date: April 23, 2012
Alarmed by widespread reports of visibly sick, deformed seafood coming out of the Gulf of Mexico, state officials have closed area waters to shrimping this morning (April 23). The waters will be closed indefinitely as scientists run tests in an effort to get a handle on a situation that is fast becoming a full-blown crisis on the Gulf Coast.
The closures including all waters in the Mississippi Sound, Mobile Bay, areas of Bon Secour, Wolf Bay and Little Lagoon mark the first official step in responding to increasingly urgent reports from fishermen and scientists of grotesquely disfigured seafood from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle.
I am deeply saddened but not surprised by the shrimping closures. I applaud the courageous move by state officials to put consumer safety first. Theres no doubt in my mind as Ive said for months on end that seafood coming out of the Gulf of Mexico is unfit for human consumption.

(5,067 posts)Shrimp Without Eyes Found in the Gulf of Mexico
We've been told Gulf-caught seafood is completely safe to consume, following the BP Oil Spill in spring 2010.
Yet, fishermen and scientists have found horrifying creatures in the Gulf of Mexico...including blue crabs without claws, shrimp without eyes and fish with lesions.
BP and Federal Agencies say these findings don't necessarily have to do with the oil spill.

Were continuing to pull up oil in our nets
Think about losing everything that makes you happy, because that is exactly what happens when someone spills oil and sprays dispersants on it. People who live here know better than to swim in or eat what comes out of our waters.

(16,020 posts)I dip shrimp in the Indian River on the other coast of Fl (have for over 20yrs)and every year there will be some shrimp with this but usually down the spine. I have never seen it on the head. Here is the oak hill, fl shrimping guru's description of cotton.

I just dread the thoughts of the possible outcome of Arctic drilling. This planet will never be the same!

(6,002 posts)a real clean-up. What they did was just push the contamination below the surface. We now have visual evidence of their shameless and willful destruction. This is what capitalism is - profits over everything, screw the planet and people. We have yet to reap Fukushima's devastation, stay tuned.
All the while MSM blah-blah's a litany of idiocy, nary a word is ever spoken about the true issues facing all of us by policticians. Big gov't blah-blah, gays blah-blah, abortion blah-blah....while people need jobs and Monsanto quietly destroys the food on dry land, BP and nuclear disaster are destroying it at sea level. The EPA? useless, rendered impotent, just like the every other purposely broken gov't institution, all in the name of the reign of corprotocracy.
I have had enough of this corporate backed raping and pillaging of the planet. Money doesn't matter if everyone is dead.
Capitalism for the elite, screw the planet and the minions. And the politicians just blah-blah-blah-blah...vote for me...it's time to wake up people.
Have ya had enough yet?

The closure is in response to routine shrimp sampling that indicated the average size were smaller than 68 head-on shrimp per pound, which is the state-regulated per-pound minimum.
"They're running 100-count," Shrimping Veteran Billy Rice said. "That's small shrimp.
"Smaller shrimp are coming in. They close it down until the larger shrimp come in."
Rice said it happens every year.

(22,057 posts)and the job market in the gulf south is horrible. A lot more families will be going hungry because of this. I understand why it is necessary and agree with the decision but BP MUST PAY!
