two passerbys stop rape. chase down & hold star Stanford swimmer until cops arrive

Stanford swimmer arrested, charged with felony sex assault

SAN JOSE -- A former Stanford University swimmer has been charged with raping an intoxicated, unconscious woman in an on-campus attack that prosecutors say was witnessed by two cyclists who nabbed him in the middle of the night as he tried to run away.

Brock Allen Turner, 19, who voluntarily withdrew from the school Tuesday, faces five felony counts that could put him behind bars for 10 years. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on Jan. 18, shortly after the attack, on suspicion of attempted rape and penetration with a foreign object, both felonies. He has been released on $150,000 bail.

Turner is charged with one count of rape of an intoxicated person, one count of rape of an unconscious person, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object of an intoxicated woman, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object of an unconscious woman and one count of assault with intent to commit rape, prosecutor Alaleh Kianerci said Tuesday.

The attack happened after midnight on a Sunday morning outside a party where Turner met the woman, Kianerci said. Two men riding bikes on campus saw an unconscious woman on the ground with a man on top of her. The man ran away, but they chased him down and held him until police arrived, the prosecutor said.

Kianerci praised the men as good Samaritans, who leapt into action because what they saw "shocked their conscience."

No he doesn't. He looks like howdy doody, but he doesn't look crazy. He looks like a million other boys in a million other yearbook photos.

It always amazes me when people take a picture of someone accused of something heinous and announce "well look how crazy he looks? I can see it in his eyes!". When in fact they have no clue as to someone's mental state based on a single photograph.

than the notion of someone with a mental illness?

Why in all 50 of these United States is unemployment among the mentally ill no better than 50%???

Because very overt prejudice and discrimination is a very very common social barrier.

I believe that the punishment for sexual assault varies depending on where it takes place, but anybody convicted of it should receive a long sentence.

There were two witnesses who saw him raping this woman. There are multiple accounts against him. The man attempted to flee, as well.

This man has absolutely no grounds on which to stand. He's not even attempting to say it was consensual--the usual lie that is used in situations like this. His running away, combined with witness corroboration, leaves him with very little room for negotiation or bargaining. Pleading to lesser charges usually happens when the prosecution's case isn't as airtight. This is a really strong case.

I would say that this man is screwed seven ways to Sunday. As it should be.

The man deserves many more years than ten--but it's a damn good start.

Hopefully the victim gets the appropriate help.

But what about the people at the party? They obviously weren't looking out for her. Hopefully it can be determined if she was drugged or if she consumed enough alcohol that she passed out. If she was drugged by somebody at the party, or if they served her enough alcohol that she passed out, hopefully that person/people can be found and put on trial as well.

Strange, from all the news stories lately, I'd have thought the cyclists would have at least had to choke him down, or shoot Mr. Turner several times because they were really scared.
