American Airlines reports $4 billion in 2014 profit

Companies often have a tough time revving up the profit machine immediately after a merger. At the start of 2014, American Airlines Group had the additional burden of a just-ended two-year stay in bankruptcy court.

But coming out of bankruptcy and merging two companies apparently hasn’t been a problem for American.

Riding strong demand and falling fuel costs, Fort Worth-based American reported Tuesday that it earned $1.1 billion in the fourth quarter and $4.2 billion for all of 2014 — the best quarter and best year in its history.

The industry’s biggest air carrier since the merger of American and US Airways in December 2013 also reported the industry’s biggest profit, surpassing No. 2 Delta Air Lines by $1.35 billion.
