https://celebrity.yahoo.com/blogs/celeb-news/joel-grey-gay-164107325.html"I don't like labels, but if you have to put a label on it, I'm a gay man," Grey revealed to People.
He was still rather young when he first recognized his feelings. "I came to realize, along with being attracted to girls, I had similar feelings for boys," he shared, also noting, "All the people close to me have known for years who I am. [Yet] it took time to embrace that other part of who I always was."
At first, it might sound surprising that a Broadway star struggled with this issue, but it's important to remember that the 82-year-old grew up in a far different environment. Recalling his days as a boy in Cleveland, Ohio, the Oscar-winner remembers "hearing the grownups talk in the next room, my mother included, talking derisively about 'fairies' and men being dragged off to jail and even worse for being who they were."
Remember that show "Happily Divorced", with Fran Drescher and her gay ex-husband? One line that sticks with me (perhaps the only one ) is "They're weird when they come out in their 40s." But their 80s?! Katy bar the door!

(16,646 posts)When they finally announced they were "out", my first reaction (fortunately only in my head) was:
"Yeah, but what's the big news?"

(9,148 posts)Unfortunate that human ignorance kept him from living the past 80 years as freely as he should have.
Wishing a peaceful existence to an accomplished & talented man.

(15,805 posts)with his guest appearance on the short-lived Brooklyn Bridge. He played a cousin recently arrived from post-WWII Europe, a survivor of the horrors. He delivered the character with a mixture of exquisitely understated sorrow and hope. Tremendous actor.
