Last edited Wed Jan 28, 2015, 10:35 PM - Edit history (1)
I've been accused of posting FOR Recs... Which is hilarious because like most DUers, most of the time... they sink like a stone.
I've even had a poster or two keep records of my posts just to use them "against" me... they think.
There was a great debate a few years back whether we should get rid of the Unrec option.
I'm glad they did... especially in our current infighting.
But here's the thing...
Sometimes the Subject Header/Posted Paragraphs/Actual Article... might piss people off.
TO ME... I Rec a thread based on its importance to be seen and commented upon. And I miss many...
That's why I will Rec a thread way past its shelf-life.
I sometimes fear... that if the header/article sends a negative/sad/shameful message... people will not recommend it... even though it might be truly important, and needs to at least be seen.
And for me, at least... THAT is the point.
Whether it's Frat boys sexually harassing/raping women/kids accidentally shooting their parents with an unsecured and loaded gun, whether it's the rest of us being screwed by Republicans... Or Democrats...
I want to know... and I want others to see the info...
Therefore... I Rec.
I Apologize if I missed yours.

(861 posts)I think it's an important news story and should be brought to peoples' attention, or I think it's an interesting and controversial thread, or I think it is a humorous thread that others might find amusing, etc.
I just like to recommend threads in general, and for different reasons. And it doesn't necessarily mean I agree with the thread either (see above my comment about "controversial"
, and this is one area where I think there is a misconception sometimes about what a recommend might mean.
There's lots of good reasons to rec a thread.

(35,015 posts)Sometimes it makes me think and I change my mind. I've been posting here for a very long time, and I'm sure if you analyzed all of my posts, you'd be able to pinpoint when I changed my mind because someone convinced me. That's not an easy thing to do.
I don't recommend highly emotional empty posts, or posts that present themselves as something they're not.

I often don't recommend out of being lazy.

(14,733 posts)I don't look at or for dates on postings. If I haven't seen a post before, and it rises to the top of the threads list, it's 'new' to me, and I deal with it at that point in time. I don't say 'gee, look, this post started X amount of time ago, I better not 'rec' or respond to it'
And I've recced posts that report on horrific things as well as wonderful things. As you note, it's a matter of saying 'This needs seen and read', not 'I'm all for this happening!'.

(84,711 posts)that I think others might want to read.
Many of us miss posts that fly through when things are busy....but will do a couple of pages to see if there is an article we missed if the first page in a Forum doesn't have anything of interest and will Kick and Recommend it or comment even if it's a couple days old.
Also, there are people here I follow because they usually have something to say that I've found of interest in the past.
I always read you "Willy T"....even if I don't always kick or reply if I can't add anything to the discussion.

(7,911 posts)I'm new here (or rather newly returned after drifting away in 2004 (ex-Deaniac here), and lurking in read-only mode for the last 3 or 4 years), but I like being able to find n2doc's toon compilations on the Greatest page.
