Dismembered human body parts were found Wednesday in a suitcase and scattered around a three-block radius in downtown San Francisco, police said.
Police responded about 4:15 p.m. to reports of a suspicious package on 11th Street between Market and Mission streets, said Officer Grace Gatpandan.
After opening the suitcase, officers found the body parts. On-scene staff from the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office confirmed that the remains were those of a human, Gatpandan said.
As investigators searched the city's South of Market neighborhood, human remains were found at three locations within a three block radius.
"There was one crime scene -- it was just very large," Gatpandan said.
Police could not confirm that all of the body parts belonged to one person.
Investigators have identified and are actively searching for a suspect wanted in connection with the dismembered body, but declined to release further details.

(41,831 posts)I have lived in the City By the Bay nearly all my life, and I have never seen a crime scene but you do hear about stuff happening from time to time. Its hard to believe that scary stuff like this can happen right here in the city. Television shows used to heighten the fear, until I got rid of my TV. Friends would assure me that serious crime like this is not common in the city, not like our sister city to the South. We were always told by our parents to keep a watch out for trouble but we always felt reasonably safe.
When I hear stuff like this happening down in MY city, it makes me feel sad, that stuff like this can go on. San Francisco has had its moments in the past with major crimes..but on the whole it really is a great place to live.

(60,010 posts)I lived there for 6 years, till I moved back here in '05...
never felt any sense of personal danger
except
when trying to cross 19th st.
or
having to look for the red light runners.
And my office was at 16th and Mission! I would walk around the Tenderloin during the day with no qualms.
I was told to avoid Bayview, because of the drive by shootings.
all in all the traffic was a bigger concern than anything else.
