The frequency of your bowel movements can say a lot about your health.
Its something weve all wondered, but were probably too sheepish to actually ask: How often should you go No. 2?
Despite the squeamish factor, experts say its a legitimate question. Your bowel movements are an important indicator of your overall health, says board-certified gastroenterologist Anish Sheth, MD, co-author of Whats Your Poo Telling You?.
While the answer to how often you should use the bathroom is typically it depends, it really depends when it comes to your bowel movements. A typical schedule may vary from three times per day to three times per week, depending on the person, Sheth tells Yahoo Health.

As one ages their happiness is directly proportional to the quality of the poop.
Just ask the old folks, when they make a nice #2 they are happy, when they can't they are grumpy.

(2,850 posts)I ate lots of salad, as that was supposed to help, but didn't report not going as I wasn't having pain and often went several days. Never became "regular" until much later in life. Now I may go a couple of times a day, but usually just once in the morning, after coffee.

(21,857 posts)numbers 3 and 4 are preferable. Oprah had a show on this topic and she said a healthy poop should be like a banana (so I guess that would be number 4 in this picture).

Alas, my doctor disagreed this week and put me on colace. Boo!
People who go multiple times a day are aliens. And people with colons like atomic clocks frighten me.
But, colon health is important. Colon cancer is a son of a bench. People need to be open and honest about digestive health. Oh, but if only we were more like Japan.

(2,931 posts)But when I reached ~30 that changed quite a bit. May I ask how old you are?
I'm virtually never ill and have never had any problems outside of a root canal, but with the gray hairs beginning to sprout, I decided to start taking preventative care seriously. A reliance on youthful health and a strong immune system will go horribly wrong someday, so I wanted to start monitoring everything closely (regular blood work, check-ups, etc).
I've never minded my irregularity, but my doctor said "Nope!" and put me on 100mg of colace.
