Comedy Central BOMBED with this IMO.
This panel talking and trying to be funny thing just isn't working.
I can't believe they thought this would be a good replacement for the Colbert Report.

(26,877 posts)...the same goes for Jon and Stephen. Of John Oliver and Stephen.
Stephen is in a class all by himself.
However, I completely disagree with you about Larry. I've been watching his show since the premiere and it is consistently VERY funny! I like the panel discussions, especially. Sort-of an irreverent Up with Steve Kornacki...

(6,001 posts)I see nothing funny about it and find it tedious and boring.
I just hope it doesn't drag down the ratings of the Daily Show
Cooley Hurd
(26,877 posts)A lead-in might drag ratings down for the show subsequently shown, but followed-by's never do.
I think Larry has mastered both the quick quip AND irony. It's a perfect followed-by for TDS.
...and you do know that Stephen's character was just a character, don't you? The real Stephen is a Liberal...

(6,001 posts)Stephen made sarcasm into an art form...I love that man.
That doesn't change the fact that I find Larry tedious and boring

(26,877 posts)I was worried you agreed with Character-Stephen!
Comedy is like wine. One person says it's dry; another says it's too fruity; another says it's too buttery.

(45,319 posts)Laughed and also learned a couple of things and the panel was 3 women and 1 man, a sight unseen on television with a man in the host's seat. So good for Larry. I find the panels to be well composed and an interesting mix from night to night, not a cookie cutter line up and not people you'd usually see interviewed together. I actually said after the episode today how glad I was they did something other than the guy behind a desk talking to a camera thing. It's refreshing to see some conversation.

(26,877 posts)He really has GREAT panels and I LOVE his droll wit!!

(11,465 posts)I like that he takes on hard topics and has people from both sides. I love that they talk about subjects rather than the next campaign, I am already sick of it and it hasn't even started yet.
And I have noticed with each week Larry gets more comfortable, it took even Stephen a few months to really find his groove. Same with Jon it's just been so long easy to forget.
I remember Rachaels first week, she was nervous to do whole show alone, now she is confident and great. Give Larry time, he was always one of my fav on Jon's show.

(15,090 posts)He has a droll way of tackling his subjects that I find amusing. Hate the round table part of the show, though.

(20,606 posts)But it really doesn't work for me.
Love John Oliver's show though!

(46,585 posts)I skip his show and watch TDS and @midnight.
Colbert left big shoes to fill.

(37,428 posts)A breezy bit of convo amongst a diverse panel rather than a deeper conversation in which one of the participants must always be a white man.
I think it's a good contrast, but I was prepared for Wilmore's low-key delivery.

(49 posts)I like his show and I like how he tackles one subject each night.

(36,851 posts)Perhaps the emphasis on issues that affect minorities (although the panels are very diverse) is off putting to :ahem: some.
I love his dry wit and honesty.
I almost didn't give it a go because Colbert was hilarious... glad I did!

(23,720 posts)I don't think he's forgotten anything. Maybe his writers did though.

(9,033 posts)It took more than a few months for him to hit his stride--imo he didn't really do that until his epic performance at the correspondents' dinner 6 months (?) later. After that he just started getting better and better.
I like Larry, I like his panel, I like that he has different viewpoints...there is certainly room for improvement, but there's time).

(9,288 posts)But the panel that follows is horrid.
He is devoting half of his ~22min (not counting commercials) show to a panel. That means they get 11 mins at best; and assuming 5 participants that is like 2 mins each and that is ignoring the whole keeping it 100 part. I don't think that is enough time for a panel format.
Panels are not very funny to begin with and it just does not work with that type of time constraint.
Maybe he retools his show like Bill Maher did. If you remember, his show started off having a not-so-new "New Comedians" segment and a section with some intern whose name I can't remember. They both sucked big time and he subsequently removed them and made the show much much better.
Hopefully Willmore will do the same.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)A lot of the panelists seem utterly unprepared - including the people who are supposed to be experts. And people trying to be funny stomps all over any of them making much of a point.

(27,814 posts)I absolutely love the show, especially the round-table discussion segment. Willmore is very adept at keeping his guests on-topic without being shrill, nor condescending. The topics set out for the nightly discussions are timely and well-chosen, and the ever-present comedic element keeps the conversation from devolving into vitriolic rhetoric.
But, hey, it's all a matter of personal taste. I know liberals who thought The Colbert Report was a waste of time, while others wouldn't think of missing a single episode. And let's remember that The Nightly Show is a replacement show for Colbert's time slot, and was never meant to be a "replacement" for Colbert's unique style of program.

(52,791 posts)I have plenty of time to watch this show develop. I loved his segments on Colbert and have seen some pretty good stuff on this show.
