by Jason Easley

A top official is publicly claiming that John Boehner misled the Israeli government into believing that President Obama had been notified and was on board with Prime Minister Netanyahus address to Congress.
During an appearance on Tel Aviv Radio, Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Tzachi Hanegbi said, It appears that the speaker of Congress made a move, in which we trusted, but which it ultimately became clear was a one-sided move and not a move by both sides, but Deputy Foreign Minister also said that Netanyahu would not be canceling his speech, What would the outcome be then? The outcome would be that we forsake an arena in which there is a going to be a very dramatic decision (on Iran).
The official did not disagree with the interviewer when he said that Boehner had misled Netanyahu.
If Netanyahu were misled, he would have apologized to the White House for the violation of protocol. Since he has not, it is clear that the Netanyahu government is trying to do damage control by throwing John Boehner under the bus. It is clear from the facts that this was a plan that was cooked up by Speaker Boehner and the Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., Ron Dermer. The Ambassador was a Republican, before he became an Israeli citizen. The plan was to humiliate President Obama and pressure him into approving new sanctions against Iran.
The claim that Israel was misled is dubious from every angle. There is no doubt that Speaker Boehner would play fast and loose with the facts. Pressure has been growing on Boehner domestically as President Obamas popularity has surged after the Democratic midterm election defeat. Obama has taken a series of steps that seized the agenda and momentum away from the new Republican congressional majority.
It is likely that Boehner and Netanyahu viewed a speech before Congress as both an opportunity to divide Democrats at home while helping Netanyahu secure reelection in Israel. The plan has completely backfired. Netanyahu has been heavily criticized in Israel while congressional Democrats are in complete revolt in the United States.
The Israeli Deputy Foreign Ministers comments were the first sign that the rats are fleeing the sinking ship. The finger pointing has begun.
The scheme to humiliate a sitting president has unraveled, as Obama remains stronger than ever.

(36,063 posts)IMO the clever guys on both sides purposefully planned to do something that showed disrespect to the administration.
They do this pretty regularly on their own, but this time they thought they'd do the dance together, which required coordination which made it looked like the unbecoming petty conspiracy of very highly placed players that it was.
No way out now but to revert to kindergarten solutions... saying 'the other guy started it'.

(61,033 posts)If Netanyahu goes through with this he will come off as a meddling bully forcefully intruding into the affairs of another state, just as he did recently when he injected himself into the Charlie Hebdo parade in Paris even though President Holland had pointedly asked him not to attend.
I'm almost hoping he goes through with this so more people will see him as the bully he is but it's pretty apparent that blaming Boner is a face-saving move that sets the stage for cancelling the speech.

(53,661 posts)And can we maintain the fantasy any longer that they want a civil society, when the signs of their hostility to all kinds of government is as in our faces as it is daily?
They are not playing by the same rule book we do with wanting to maintain legal order, procedure or protocol. Or government itself. Anarachy doesn't care about the nuances you cite that liberals believe in.
They want what they want and want it yesterday. We cannot hide from what they are doing any longer. This is a coup by the GOP mixing religion and state. At last report, Netanyahu is doubling down and has not cancelled. He is now clearly saying Obama's negotiations with Iran must be stopped.
I have given my examples of why this plays into GOP hands and not faulting our side, as we followed the rules. This nation is nothing like France, either.
They have come up with the ultimate stealth attack by tacking their ambitions unto Israel, which is at the core of Christian mythos. And those people show up at every election, they don't get caught up in minutae and complaints about Democrats not doing this or that fast enough to suit them, or even do things that are against the law to please them, or can't be done in the framework of the law.
It's a win for the GOP.

Its a bit more than your Republican, "Bash Obama-fest" we are used too, they've recruited a world leader to play too. Heck Maybe Netanyahu donated to the RNC mega bucks for this privilege? Screw up peace talks with Iran, Sheldon Adelson has a real boner for a war. He paid for it by Gawd.

The largest attack campaign against Democrats this fall is being waged by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a trade association organized as a 501(c)(6) that can raise and spend unlimited funds without ever disclosing any of its donors. The Chamber has promised to spend an unprecedented $75 million to defeat candidates like Jack Conway, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Jerry Brown, Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA), and Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA). As of Sept. 15th, the Chamber had aired more than 8,000 ads on behalf of GOP Senate candidates alone, according to a study from the Wesleyan Media Project. The Chambers spending has dwarfed every other issue group and most political party candidate committee spending. A ThinkProgress investigation has found that the Chamber funds its political attack campaign out of its general account, which solicits foreign funding. And while the Chamber will likely assert it has internal controls, foreign money is fungible, permitting the Chamber to run its unprecedented attack campaign. According to legal experts consulted by ThinkProgress, the Chamber is likely skirting longstanding campaign finance law that bans the involvement of foreign corporations in American elections.
In recent years, the Chamber has become very aggressive with its fundraising, opening offices abroad and helping to found foreign chapters (known as Business Councils or AmChams). While many of these foreign operations include American businesses with interests overseas, the Chamber has also spearheaded an effort to raise money from foreign corporations, including ones controlled by foreign governments. These foreign members of the Chamber send money either directly to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, or the foreign members fund their local Chamber, which in turn, transfers dues payments back to the Chambers H Street office in Washington DC. These funds are commingled to the Chambers 501(c)(6) account which is the vehicle for the attack ads:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has created a large presence in the small, oil-rich country of Bahrain. In 2006, the Chamber created a local affiliate called the U.S.-Bahrain Business Council (USBBC), an organization to help businesses in Bahrain take advantage of the Chambers network of government and business relationships in the US and worldwide. As the USBBCs bylaws state, it is not an actual separate entity, rather it is simply an office of the U.S. Chamber of Commerces 501(c)(6) trade association. Many of the USBBCs board members are Bahrainian, including Aluminum Bahrain, Gulf Air, Midal Cables, the Nass Group, Bahrain Maritime & Mercantile International, the Bahrain Petroleum Company (state-owned), Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, and First Leasing Bank. With each of these foreign board members to the USBBC contributing at least $10,000 annually, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce raises well over $100,000 a year in money from foreign businesses through its operation in Bahrain. Notably, the membership form provided by the USBBC directs applicants to send or wire their money directly to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The membership form also explicitly states that the foreign-owned firms are welcomed.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Foreign interests and oil companies also went after a California law on reducing pollution that even the Governator protested. They didn't win, but are definitely into our government.

(53,661 posts)They've been aggressive since Day One. Obama has ticked off Israel's RW for a long time, so has Kerry. They have violated the rules in regard to many things with the USA and our ideas for settling things there. That is their right legally, but there is that undercover here that will support them. I think all three - Netanyahu, the Koches/ GOP have varied agendas, but for Boehner, this is a defining moment for the RW religionists.

"Strengthening The U.S./Israel Friendship
Senator Gillibrand will continue to strengthen Americas close relationship with the State of Israel. In both the House of Representatives and the Senate, she has stood with Israel to protect its citizens against terrorist threats, strengthen sanctions against Iran to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons, and support Israels continued efforts to bring peace and security to its people. The U.S. and Israel have a strong and historic bond, and Senator Gillibrand continues to advocate for policies that strengthen their deep friendship. In the National Defense Authorization Act, Senator Gillibrand voted to add over $300 million to the budget for Israel missile defense, and will continue to fight to ensure that there is no doubt that the U.S. will always stand with Israel, our historic and closest ally in the Middle East.

A senior Israeli official suggested on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been misled into thinking an invitation to address the U.S. Congress on Iran next month was fully supported by the Democrats. [...]
"It appears that the speaker of Congress made a move, in which we trusted, but which it ultimately became clear was a one sided move and not a move by both sides," Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Tzachi Hanegbi told 102 FM Tel Aviv Radio on Friday.
Rep. John Boehner's office misleading someone? Say it ain't so.
Acknowledging that Democrats had been "pained" by the invitation, Hanegbi said Netanyahu and Israeli emissaries were making "a huge effort to make clear to them that this is not a move that flouts the president of the United States".
We just agreed to go around the standard protocol for these things because Boehner told us we were throwing a surprise party for the president and we didn't want to spoil the surprise. So ... surprise!
You know, I'm not sure I'd put a lot of faith in the competence of any foreign diplomat that trusts John Boehner not to make them look bad. I'm just saying. It doesn't show a lot of knowledge of the country they're diplomating in.

Yea, I think Bibi has thrown the Speaker under the bus.
I'm convinced, though, that Boehner got all giggly-giddy with the notion of emabarassing/ disrepecting the President; and how it would finally make him look like a strong leader among the nut jobs.
But the masterminds behind the dirty politics is Demer & Bibi, and maybe some GOP operatives lurking in the shadows.
Boehner is just not that creative.
