121 Seconds Of Molly Ivins On Late Term Abortion This Video May Change Your Views

For decades, anti-choice Republican lawmakers have tried to chip away at the legal reproductive rights of women, and the battle continues today. When it comes to late-term abortion, the topic is more difficult even for some Liberals/Democrats. The reason for this is because late-term abortion is highly misunderstood.
The late Molly Ivins was never known to hold back on her thoughts and beliefs. The journalist, columnist, humorist, and author, raised in Texas, had a brilliant gift of getting her messages across while adding streetwise realism with a lot of wit.
Here she is speaking about late-term abortions at The Connecticut Forums A Changing Political Landscape in 1996. Ivins explains late-term abortions in a way Ive never heard before, and in a way I will never forget.
Here is the videos text:
You have those late-term abortions, because either the mother is going to die, the child is going to die, or both are going to die. These procedures are incredibly rare. I only know of two in the state of Texas since Roe v. Wade was passed. They were both what they call cases of babies with no brain. The brain, the childs brain stem had developed, but then something went horribly wrong and these children literally had no brains. Now, is that an easy call? Is that simple to you?
I am really, Im let me try and calm down its not going to do any good for me to get excited. If the choice These are women who want their babies, they want the babies, terribly. What would you do, and Im talking to the women in the audience. If a doctor said to you,

(89,930 posts)Now Molly Ivins on the other hand - I miss her a LOT. I thought the same thing about her passing that I felt about John Lennon's assassination in December 1980 - just before reagan was to take over. "DAMN. NOW is when we need him."

(14,449 posts)Goodness the way the media through Right Wingers makes it seem like woman at the 8th month decided it was a bad decision like buying the wrong shoes and decides to run have an abortion. I know that is not true but talk about RARE, you can't get any more rare then 2 in the 32 million in Texas in 42 years. Why are right wingers such liars?????

(11,676 posts)and it really makes me upset that people would rather see a woman and her child die before acknowledging that late term abortions are not really about choice, they are about life and death. literally, life and death..

Molly didn't let those two goons talk over her either. I'm tired of these frauds who derail discussions everywhere and proud of my President for resisting all their medieval BS.

Hey Ollie, I seriously believe you need to STFU. You are a man and as far as I am concerned so far out of the decision of what a woman should or should not do with their bodies.
Molly.

These are women who want their babies, they want the babies, terribly. What would you do, and Im talking to the women in the audience. If a doctor said to you,
Either your baby has to die, or you will die, or your health will be wrecked for the rest of your life, and youll never be able to have another child.
It is past time that men should sit down and STFU! Yes freshwest, it is abundantly clear some only wish to derail and try to put the little woman in her place. Oh, I see it here a lot, talk over, intimidate and DERAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Efing bullies.

(2,020 posts)At the time I could have gotten an abortion quickly enough to save my life. With the new abortion laws here in Ohio, they may not be able to act quickly enough to save a woman's life. Fortunately for me, it was just a rip roaring urinary tract infection treatable with massive doses of antibiotics.
However, I almost died from complications from the delivery for my babies. After the last one, my Ob-gyn said if I got pregnant again it would kill me. I spent ten years dreading every period and in near panic, if I was late for a period. My doc said I was not a candidate for a tubal ligation due to other health issues. It was a great relief when I finally had to have a hysterectomy. The only thing that kept me somewhat sane was the fact that the abortion option was safe, easy to obtain and legal. Now the laws are so draconian that it makes it very hard to get even a medically necessary abortion in Ohio.
I miss Molly Ivins so very much. Her voice is greatly missed.

(20,047 posts)Today though, the person on her left who kept trying to interrupt her would just yell over her and cut her off. Manners are dead in discourse now, even a person of her intellect and verbal skills would be shouted down before their point began to resonate with the listeners. That's how it's done now days. Which leads to the person trying to make the point having to raise their voice, which takes away from the message and at that point many, if not most, listeners are easily lost unless they're already committed to one side or the other of the argument.
How do we get our message across like she did in modern times?
sheshe2
(97,458 posts)Yup, he sure was a pompous ass. "That's not what the doctor said." Blah blah blah.
Today? How do we do it? Not sure, yet I would say stay calm, focused and speak evenly.

(20,047 posts)I can see it now that you pointed it out, but I didn't place the older him my mind calls up with that person in the video at first. He was a pompous ass for the time, but now days he would be considered genteel by comparison to what we're up against when it comes to discussing reproductive rights. They send out their loudest and most aggressive speakers, or so my experience has been. If they can talk over you, then they win. If you talk over them, then they twist it into a win for them. It's not even that we're up against people who are intellectually a challenge, they're just loud and rude. It's a constant source of frustration, and beyond keeping on topic and keeping our cool there's little else we can do that I know.
