I'm talking as a legitimate threat to the United States. Where we all might be forced to start wearing strict Islamic based clothing standards and abide by an extremists view of Islam in our beliefs and way of life.
I mean, hell, maybe they could borrow some speed boats or something, and somehow sneak by all our radars and coast guard, etc.
I'm talking about a full scale invasion, where ISIS takes on our military with guns blazing, a frontal assault.
Anyone? Don't tell me it is going to be *crickets* on this one.

(861 posts)It is just my reaction to all the doom and gloom hype about ISIS lately, I suppose.

(11,619 posts)armed US with the most modern war fleet in the world? No.
ISIS could certainly instigate attacks in the US as they have in Europe, Egypt, Libya, and Lebanon.
For the foreseeable future, the threat from ISIS is extremist cells recruited here from among disaffected and unemployed poor youth who would make attacks like those on Charlie Hebdo, Copenhagen, Libya, Lebanon, and Egypt.
I suspect that the first time ISIS cells attack a church, synagogue, theater, government building, or free speech rally. a majority of Americans will demand that the US invade and kill every last one of them.
To me, it makes better sense to support allies in the region that are becoming more and more willing to hunt them down and kill them, as ISIS is an existential threat to Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
NOTE: I did not mention Israel because even though ISIS is an existential threat to Israel, the above countries would rather have their entire populations burned to death in cages before they openly allied with Israel.
NOTE: Shia Iraq and Iran would also be unlikely to form an alliance with the Suni countries. ISIS considers all Shia Muslims guilty of apostasy, which is punishable by death.

(60,157 posts)We tend to scoff at revenge being a motivator, there is not enough understanding here, of how important it is as a factor.

(1,459 posts)But I almost guarantee they will influence the U.S., and our next Presidential election if they attack anyone here.
If in the next 16 months (pre 2016 election) there is a major attack on a group in the U.S.
If they kidnap someone on our soil, and either behead or burn them to death as they have in other Countries, you can bet you bottom dollar that the next Presidential candidate will have to be more than a pacifist.
Remember 9/11? Foreign policy and terrorism dominated the next Presidential election 3 1/2 years after the attack.
Remember Spains terrorist attack on the train only days before that election?
The Hawks will win, the Pacifists will lose. I can almost guarantee it.
So, although I hate to sound like President Bush, for the sake of the 2016 election you had better hope that "We take of them over there, before they take care of us over here".

(101,833 posts)I doubt they could kidnap an American citizen in the continental United States and get him or her out of the country.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)Based upon the recruitment techniques, they get young American citizens to join their cause in Syria.
After training them, they could then be sent back, they kidnap an American citizen, behead them, and put the video on the internet. All within the borders of the US.
That's the real threat from ISIS, and it's a law enforcement issue combined with a foreign intelligence issue so these people who make it out of the country to join ISIS can be tracked if they attempt to return.

(3,496 posts)They recruit over the Internets (or in mosques which are radicalized), train them in the ME, and then send them home back to the West.

(15,429 posts)It would require getting a team back into the United States to pull it off, but it is certainly within the realm of the possible. The key would be getting American citizens who have joined ISIS back into the country.

(1,459 posts)I am just saying that I think "IF" it happens it will be an ISIS militant (homegrown wannabe, or recruit) and they will do some small time attack, or kidnapping. And then videotape as they behead, or burn them RIGHT HERE in the U.S.
I am not saying this is likely, but if something like this happens, then the whole dynamic of the election changes. That was my point. With these maniacs, they don't need to invade, they just need to scare.

Here's an idea...all those here who want USA to invade the ME and slaughter the ISIS, can go over there and fight.
Sorta modern day Crusade.
Winners get to live in the Green Zone or some place equally out of the way.
I get dibs on what the fundies leave behind.
