I made a scarf

out of an old sweatshirt, complete with the fringing on the end. I have enough sweatshirt to make a watchcap, anyone ever do this?

The cold is unreal for down here, and I didn't have things like a scarf. So naturally, I made one.

What are you doing to beat the cold?

I'm still trying out how to make a good hat. It's cold here.

that would probably work perfectly as a beanie (watchcap). I don't want to screw up all the ugliness until I get a hat out of it, though, so that's why I'm asking. Oh, and then I have a chunk of sweatshirt left, too.

I want an actual hat, so I will actually sew, but I don't want to sew a lot.

Tue Feb 24, 2015, 01:54 AM

you could cut off a piece, where the ribbing is at the end of the sleeve, then put it on your head to see if it will fit. If it does, just sew the hole at the top, then make a pom pom and cover the sewn part with that. Lol, sorry, but you said you wanted a hat, you didn't say it had to be a great hat. At least it would be warm.

The sweat shirt would be more work I think, though it depends which parts of it you are going to use to make a hat??

It's below freezing here again, we may as well be living at the North Pole.

I have lots of hats and would be happy to send you one.

I also have a snowsuit that is supposed to keep you warm in temps below -15. And a snow jacket with a hood with fake fur on the front. And very thick mittens. You probably need mittens also.

I have snow shoes but the snow is so deep it's not worth putting them on, it's better to bring a shovel and clear a path to wherever you want to go.

Stay warm, it can't last much longer.

You need snowshoes?

It was a phenomenon when we had an inch of snow on the ground for two, count them two, days.

EDIT: I like making things. Don't worry, I do it just because my frugal crafty nature demands that I make things if there are materials laying around and I need something, hence: Scarf.

You are caught up in a situation that you are not prepared for, and you are making what you need. Suggest double layers for the hat. And if you can, wear something over your head and wear socks when you go to bed. We experience heat loss from our heads because they are not covered. If you have a rain jacket, wear it over your sweaters when you go out because the rain jacket will help stop the wind cutting thru your warm clothes. Give us a picture of your scarf!!

I had to go attend to a server in Bethesda in January, and didn't bring a hat, and was told to walk to the Metro. I absolutely hallucinated with the cold. I kid you not. Some ladies took me into their hair salon, gave me some hot tea and called me a cab. They saved my life.

I had no hat, no scarf, though I was wearing a wool coat and a wool ladies suit, but if your head and ears aren't covered in wet cold, you are done.

to a blend like alpaca and silk. It's pure luxury to spin.

Right now, I'm plying some rainbow painted merino wool on one wheel and I started spinning some Targhee wool on the other but it's in a colorway that isn't very successful (it was a gift, I'd never have bought it) and I don't think it's even going to be attractive if I finish it in fractal spinning.

The rainbow Merino is sock yarn. I have no idea whether I'll actually knit the socks or I'll just give up and weave something with it.

ETA: spinning is something you can learn in half an hour but it takes a lot of practice to get good enough at it that you can spin what you want to spin.

Feb 2015

My sister down in Georgia has been out covering and wrapping up her trees and plants...it might get down to the low 30s there tonight as the storm front moves in.

Do you have a furnace in your house? My sis knows quite a few over where she lives who don't. I'm not sure, but doesn't Mississippi stay even hotter than most other states of the South in Winter?

We're all fine out here, wondering where our Winter is. It's been sunny and weirdly warm all year and I've only seen snow fall once, early last Dec. You know, during a normal winter here, I'll keep a hat on my head all the time, to keep my "heat" in so I don't use the furnace so much.

Everyone in my area was impacted by that awful Oso slide last year but we didn't personally lose anyone...the brother of a friend wasn't found til two months later, the last victim finally recovered after a four month search. Some of the families are suing the county, the state, a logging company, and the Washington Department of Natural Resources...I sure hope they win.

You take care, Aerows, stay warm, and I know you'll have fun designing that hat. Your scarf turned out pretty cool!

that will allow you to pull it over the tops of your ears if it's windy. You can either stitch straight across the top and either have it stand up straight with a couple of points (tassels help) or put it on with one of the points facing forward and just pull it into a slouch; OR you can gather/pleat it at the top for a rounder silhouette. The bottom can either be folded up an inch or so or simply rolled.

After all, this stuff will most likely be languishing in the back of a cupboard for the next decade after this stinking weather blows out and it gets more normal again.

I slept in old momjeans and a sweater last night. I needed to. The wind is no longer a factor, so I can wear my usual shorts and t-shirt tonight.

I've got my little fleece strip over my head and shoulders, held on with a binder clip. Probably look weird, but, hey.

It's a balmy 22 degrees here in snowy North Carolina, where the normal temperature for February is 56 degrees daytime, 38 degrees at night. We're expecting another front in by tomorrow night, with more snow (we hope it isn't ice, otherwise the lines will go down).

A tip I learned from the guys on the flight line when I was in the USAF was to wear panty hose under your pants, even if you have long johns/thermal underwear. Amazing how that keeps you warm (I've got an old pair of knee high stockings on now, feet are nice and toasty).

The best kind of clothes for a protest pose
Is this ensemble of pantyhose
Pulled over the shorts, worn under the skirt
That doubles as a cape.

To reveal you in capri pants
You fashion out of ski pants,
In a jersey knit designed to fit
The contour of your shape.
Then cinch it with a cord from the drape.

And that's the revolutionary costume for today...

Da da da da dum...
