(7,318 posts)That's the explanation I've seen for those who are not seeing blue/black.
The problem for you is larger than this dress: what other more precious things (grandchildren) or high $ things (photos of a house you want to purchase) are you not seeing in the correct light?
boston bean
(36,909 posts)so no worries there. And I think everyone in the house believes the house is grey with black shutters....
My iPhone is gold.... hmmmmm maybe there is a problem there.....

(8,352 posts)Two perfectly calibrated monitors here. On both, I see the correct Blue & Black dress. My S.O. saw them first as White & Gold. Then she saw the Blue & Black. Back and forth. She honestly believes it is a .gif or a trick. It isn't. It is a difference in perception based on psychobiology.

(7,429 posts)Originally I saw it as Gold and White and then when someone said it was Black/Blue I could finally see it.
Personally someone needs a better camera. At least do a white-balance beforehand!

Well, if I bring my phone in different lighting, it does change a little. Still could not see it is completely white though.
It is a very light blue.

Edited to add: And in these examples I do see the black part.
LiberalElite
(14,691 posts)Yes these have a black part. The white dress has a gold part. There, I settled it.....
Jamastiene
(38,206 posts)That's what I've been saying. People seem stuck on the either/or that has been given as the choices. It's a push poll, I tell ya. There are numerous colors, depending on the dress in question. There are several different ones.
Jamastiene
(38,206 posts)I don't see black at all in there. I see more of an antique gold color with a pastel blue color.
Also, if you look at the dress and scroll down from the top, it appears gold and off white. If you look at the bottom of the dress and scroll up, it appears that antique dark gold color and the pastel blue color.
So, I still don't see any black in the dress no matter which way I look at it. I saw the one on one page that was supposed to be in some catalog as black and blue, but I still didn't see the black in it, just a dark antique gold color.
I don't get the argument over it really I wish I could see the black and blue version and actually see the black they claim it is. Maybe my eyes are messed up. I wear a lot of black and know it when I see it. So, it's odd that I'm not seeing it and others are.

Jamastiene
(38,206 posts)Only look at the top portion of the dress and it appears white and gold, then as you scroll down, it turns darker and darker blue. I still don't see black in that picture though.
Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)Focusing on the dress, your brain sees the overall murkiness of the picture, and tells you that you're looking at white anf gold, in shadow. But then you notice the background, and it's not in shadow, so now the actual color of the dress - blue and black - comes out.
it's an interesting little thing that demonstrates that nothing you see is real. Now that may sound kind of woo-woo, but... it's true. Every shape, color, image you see... is imagination. The colors and images you "see" are actually just how your brain is interpreting electrical impulses that are generated by photons hitting your retinas at different speeds and angles. You have no guarantee that the stuff you are seeing is actually as it appears. Thus the old thing about how your red might not be MY red.
This is how all optical illusions and facial simulacra work; if you saw what was actually there, you'd never be fooled by them. but since what you 'see' is really just your brain trying to interpret electrons pinging around, your "vision" can be fooled pretty easily.

TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)the sun is on the other side so the dress is reflecting the blue sky and screwing up the white balance.
Digital cameras are much worse for that sort of thing than film was.

Each time decidedly so.
It's cloudy here today, but maybe it being just a tad brighter at midday caused the shift?
Interesting little perception puzzle, in any case.

(40,472 posts)If your mind processes the screen as a painting or printed photograph, then you see blue and black.
That's my guess.
I'm entirely unable to see the white and gold illusion, probably because I've been messing around with computers, television, and photography for decades. The "window" interpretation probably died in me when I was striving for the correct color balance as a television tech.
The NTSC color television system in the U.S.A. was fondly referred to by engineers and other technical people as "Never The Same Color" twice.
The color "gold" could always start bitter feuds, especially when upstart SONY equipment was mixed with old school U.S.A. equipment.

(63,221 posts)Since last evening and today I am only seeing blue and black. Very strange.
Quixote1818
(31,145 posts)In real life it's a blue and black dress, however the camera's white balance looks off and the dress which is in the shade is over exposed so the shadows and dark blues even wash out. It's right in the middle of a threshold between looking like a white dress in the shade or a blue dress that was over exposed. If you look at the pixels directly they are a light blue but the dress can go back and forth in ones perception depending on the angle of your monitor or your perception of thinking it could be a white dress in the shadow giving it a cold off white appearance.
Here is some info on how the angle of a monitor changes colors. http://blogs.plos.org/mitsciwrite/2013/05/02/your-computer-screen-from-an-angle/

(26,357 posts)I've looked at the same photo a couple times today. Once, I saw it as blue and black, another, I saw it as white and gold, did a double-take, and yes, it's the same photo.
Turns out that the human eye and the visual pathways in the brain have built-in color-correction as part of our visual processing, and this photo tricks it so you might see the same photo with completely different colors.
Freaky.

I saw a brief demonstration out there somewhere and thought they should have left it white an gold. It looked a little less like hoops on a barrel that way.

(8,646 posts)My daughter showed me the dress on her iPhone last night. It took me awhile, because something seemed off, but I decided white and gold. Then today at work 2 different co-workers also showed me the picture on their phones. Still looked white and gold to me. I tried to see the black and blue but couldn't.
Then I open up this thread and lo and behold, this is the first time I've seen it on a big screen/computer and I instantly saw black and blue.
Just weird. I get it's an optical illusion but strange that I saw it so differently on 2 different screens.
