Don't you think that levels the playing field for progressive politicians? I mean it hurts the Texas oil Birchers and it also hurts the Silcon Valley Center-right Venture capitalists, with all their investments in Alt-Energy stocks.
Of Coarse the Saudis were most probably after Putin and the Chavistas in Venezuela, not to mention Tesla, and the Tar Sands in Canada, but they may have inadvertently leveled the playing field for economic progressives to win elections. The traditional conservatives who fund the Turd Way Democrats, and the Far Right Elites who bankroll the GOP are hurt by this.

(26,729 posts)The mistaken assumption here is that the elite get their money primarily from oil profits. That may be true for many of them... but hardly enough to shift the playing field.

(806 posts)The oil industry has multitudes of very rich individuals that would spend some of their wealth on politics. But is hardly a majority of the very wealthy. The big bankers and corporate war lords
from dozens of other industrial or financial operations will spend liberally to influence our political future. The fact that oil prices have declined will not in any way stop the flow of money into the political arena.

(10,429 posts)the price of gas got down as low as $1.64 here in Kansas City. Today it's back up to 2.29. Yet oil hasn't gone up. I think they're actually making more than enough off of gasoline. So I don't think they'll be any less profitable this year than the past few years.
So while the Saudi Royal family may be "suffering", the oil companies that buy oil are probably better off now. They're making more, and the customers are so damn glad gas isn't $4.
