Colorado DUers check in: Sanford hires interim police chief from Colorado Springs
Question: Are we in for more status quo? Or will this guy shake some trees and create a more functional and fair police department?
The former chief of police in Colorado Springs, Colo., has been hired as interim police chief in Sanford, City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. announced today.
Richard Myers, who also served as chief in Appleton, Wis., and in suburbs of Chicago and Detroit, is a 35-year law enforcement veteran. He takes over a police department reeling from the slaying of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot to death by crime-watch volunteer George Zimmerman.
The department has been led temporarily by Capt. Darren Scott, who was appointed when police Chief Bill Lee temporarily stepped aside amid criticism of his department's investigation of the killing.
Myers, 57, a native of Rochester, Michigan, retired about six months ago as chief in Colorado Springs, the nation's 46th largest city. He was forced out of the job by the mayor's desire to "change direction," according to the city's newspaper.
