In 1976, Paddy Chayefsky suggested that the world no longer operated as a system of nations. Ned Beatty explained to Peter Finch that the world was now a system of dollars, rubles, francs, yens, pounds, and deutchmarks.
For the last 6 years, we've seen it's impossible for the GOP in Washington to reach across the aisle to fellow Americans who count themselves as members of the Democratic Party. Instead, as witnessed in the last 6 weeks, it's starting to appear that our GOP is much more capable of reaching across the oceans to fellow rabid conservatives in other countries who are intent, as is our GOP, to maintain the current world order.
Sheldon Adelson isn't a US right wing phenom - he's a global right winger, providing as much, if not more financial support to Israel's right wing. Which is kind of the manta for our side of this equation. And yes, we need to think in terms of that same global equation too, like those with the iron boot heels are so readily doing, as you point out.
