(46,133 posts)Apart from being pointless, a petition drive as a basis for criminal prosecution strikes me a particularly bad idea. Let's imagine that the repubs start a petition campaign to prosecute some administration official for "lying to Congress" or some such. Do you really think that the number of people making such a demand should play any role whatsoever in whether a prosecution should be initiated.
And what exactly is the follow up once the petition is ignored, as it will be.
A new petition demanding that the President be impeached for abetting a Logan Act violation after the fact?
The letter is, as it should, blowing up in the repubs face. Why make a demand for a prosecution that will never happen and in so doing change the narrative? Have you ever heard of the Dear Comandante letter? If you haven't, you probably will since the more people talk about the Logan Act, the more likely it is that the Dear Comandante letter -- which most people have forgotten about -- will be raised.
But this is just my view. Others may disagree.

(130,393 posts)sufficient to support prosecution, and a petition won't make it happen. In over 200 years nobody has ever been convicted for a Logan Act violation - a guy was indicted in 1803 but never tried. I'd rather watch the GOPers make asses of themselves internationally, as they are doing now, than have them prosecuted, probably unsuccessfully, in a proceeding that they would claim was politically motivated.

(17,997 posts)Prosecution based on a petition. I do not believe for a minute that anyone will be prosecuted.
However, I believe that the petition itself sends a message to these Republicans, it will be addressed by the WH (all petitions with over 100k signatures in fewer than 30 days) and it let's our party know that we want a strong, unwavering, united response from Democrats.
I do want cotton prosecuted. Regardless of anything else. Let him continue to hang himself and then prosecute.
Just my 2 cents

There are multiple petitions with the same intent.
This one has over 105k in less than a day
