35. lol I am so enjoying reading this through...it is wild. EarlG, ah the memories:

Hail To The Chump

"They misunderestimated me." — Bentonville, Ark., Nov. 6, 2000

They surely did, George, and now we're stuck with you. Was it Al Gore's lack of charisma, the Supreme Court's lack of subtletly, or just the plain fact that people can't help but like the village idiot (in a sad sort of way)? But that's not really the point any more. The point is - what are you going to do now? Let's take a look at some of the Bush campaign promises...

BUSH ON EDUCATION

"Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" — Florence, S.C., Jan. 11, 2000

Here's what they're learning so far - that if you drink and drive, one day you might get to be president. Or that affirmative action is a bad idea, because it's unfair to disadvantaged rich white people. But anyway. One of Bush's campaign promises is $5 billion more for literacy over five years, which is fine, but surely there's not going to be much left after he's done spending it on himself...

Under Bush, Texas schools had some of the nation's highest dropout rates, and the system of accountability that Bush extolled caused tens of thousands of students (mostly minorities) to quit school each year. This loss, in turn, boosted test scores - giving the illusion of an education miracle.

"The Texas miracle in education is a myth," said Walter Haney, a Boston College researcher who studies test statistics. (Washington Post, April 21, 2000)

BUSH ON ABORTION

"I think it's important for those of us in a position of responsibility to be firm in sharing our experiences, to understand that the babies out of wedlock is a very difficult chore for mom and baby alike. ... I believe we ought to say there is a different alternative than the culture that is proposed by people like Miss Wolf in society. ... And, you know, hopefully, condoms will work, but it hasn't worked." — Meet the Press, Nov. 21, 1999

Bush has promised that there will be no move toward a constitutional abortion ban. And yet he has previously stated:

"I will do everything in my power to restrict abortions," (Dallas Morning News, October 22, 1994).

And...

"Roe v. Wade was a reach... It overstepped the Constitutional bounds, as far as I'm concerned," (New York Times, January 21, 2000).

And what about...

When asked whether he would fight for changes in the Republican Party Platform’s abortion plank, Bush said, "The [Republican Party] platform is what I stand on, and the platform says there will be a pro-life constitutional amendment. And we need to be a pro-life party." (The Early Show 2/18/00)

Well you can make your own minds up about where you think GW stands on abortion. But it is interesting that his Attorney General will be a man who is so vehemently anti-choice that he even wants to ban the contraceptive pill. Will John Ashcroft do his utmost to prevent so-called "pro-lifers" from bombing abortion clinics and targeting clinic workers for assassination?

BUSH ON DEFENSE

"When I was coming up, it was a dangerous world, and you knew exactly who they were... It was us vs. them, and it was clear who them was. Today, we are not so sure who the they are, but we know they're there." — Iowa Western Community College, Jan 21, 2000

Which is obviously why we need a missile defense system, another of Bush's campaign promises. Never mind about pissing off the Russkies - hell, George's dad won the Cold War didn't he? And what about the objections from our European allies? George's advice - go eat a Big Mac already. By the way, if you're wondering how much this is all going to cost, the GOP is looking at upwards of $120 billion.

Bush has also pledged to reverse eight years of "erosion" in military readiness, but so far, he has pledged to seek a defense budget increase of only $4 billion to $5 billion a year, far short of what Pentagon officials say they would need.

He has expressed support for the controversial "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy on gays in the military, although the official Republican Party platform bluntly states that homosexuality is incompatible with military service.

BUSH ON ENVIRONMENT/ENERGY

"It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas." — Beaverton, Ore., Sep. 25, 2000

Indeed they do, George, indeed they do. Which is probably why you promised during your campaign to increase domestic oil and gas production and exploration in the protected Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. And your opposition to the ratification of the Kyoto agreement on global warming is going to do a pretty good job of making you look like you're leading a country of arrogant assholes.

A quick look at Bush's record on the environment: Texas ranks first on the EPA's toxic release inventory, and Houston surpassed Los Angeles as the city with the country's dirtiest air.

Bush's pick for Interior Secretary, Gale A. Norton, says that people should have the "right to pollute". Hey, it's a free country...

BUSH ON TAXES

"A tax cut is really one of the anecdotes to coming out of an economic illness." — The Edge With Paula Zahn, Sept. 18, 2000

Just like his daddy, Bush promised no increase in personal or corporate tax rates. We'll be keeping a close eye on that one. He also wants to eliminate the inheritance tax, based upon the conservative-spread lie that this is income which is taxed twice (again with those poor, disadvantaged rich folks).

Also while Bush promised relief for the working poor, the fact is his proposed income tax cut of $1.3 trillion will give no relief whatsoever to the millions of working families who don't earn enough to pay income taxes, but who do pay payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare. His plan offers no help for around twenty million working families, the bottom 22 percent.

BUSH ON GUN CONTROL

"I think we ought to raise the age at which juveniles can have a gun."

Bush promised to raise the age for handgun possession to 21, background checks at gun shows if they are instant, and would sign a bill requiring child-safety locks to be sold with guns.

However, here's what Attorney General-designate John Ashcroft has to say about the 1994 ban on assault weapons: "I believe it wrongheaded... It has severely restricted the rights of law-abiding citizens to participate in many activities involving guns."

John Ashcroft has received money from the NRA and other pro-gun groups, and has worked in support of their agenda.

In 1999, Missouri voters rejected an Ashcroft-supported, NRA-sponsored ballot initiative that would have allowed almost anyone (including convicted child molesters and stalkers) to carry concealed guns in public in Missouri. Ashcroft even recorded radio ads endorsing the proposal.

There's much, much more here.

BUSH ON HEALTH CARE

"I don't think we need to be subliminable about the differences between our views on prescription drugs." — Orlando, Fla., Sept. 12, 2000

Bush promised a tax credit of up to $2,000 per family to help low-income working Americans buy health insurance. Problem is that not only has anyone yet managed to create a tax-credit plan that works (a similar 1993 plan was repealed by congress) - but a typical midrange policy that pays for doctors' visits, prescription drugs, and outpatient care can cost between $4,000 and $6,000 in annual premiums.

BUSH ON SOCIAL SECURITY

"They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it's some kind of federal program." — St. Charles, Mo., Nov. 2, 2000

Bush's plan sets aside $2.4 trillion for Social Security. Wait a second... so that's a $1.3 trillion dollar tax cut, and $2.4 trillion for Social Security. Wow, that's a lot of trillions. Still, as the man himself so adroitly points out: "It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it." (Reuters, May 5, 2000)

back in early 2005. I was shell-shocked that the Simpleton Simian had actually been re-elected and needed reassurance that I wasn't the only sane person left. Been here, a bit on and off and formerly with a different handle - MN_ChimpH8R - ever since.

ETA - so many memories - Graywarrior's never-freed duck, the chicken wars, YAK and other Lounge silliness, the Great Moon Bombing Thread, which may still be the funniest thing ever on DU, celebrating the '08 election, ruthlessly mocking Mittwit in '12. This is a great place!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/top10/top10_2001_01.html

January 15, 2001

1 John Ashcroft - As conservative as it gets, this is a scary pick for Attorney General.

2 Gale Norton - Bush's choice for Interior Secretary thinks that the Confederacy was a super idea. And that people should have the "right to pollute".

3 Katherine Harris - This week claimed no responsiblity for the Florida election fiasco. Blamed Jeb Bush.

4 Jeb Bush - This week claimed no responsiblity for the Florida election fiasco. Blamed Katherine Harris.

5 Tom DeLay - Didn't do anything this week, but we still hate him. You'll be seeing a lot more of Tom.

6 Bob Jones III - Thought we were done with this guy last year. Funny that he showed up again with the whole Ashcroft thing.

7 Karl Rove - Picks up a slot as White House advisor even though his candidate lost the election.

8 Jim Gilmore - Virginia's Governor wants to save his political ass by spending the state's entire tobacco settlement on repealing the car tax.

9 Spence Abraham - New Energy Secretary previously wanted to abolish the Department of Energy.

10 Linda Chavez - Adieu. Sayonara. Auf Weidersehn. Buh-bye, Linda.

The webarchive.org link does work for many thing, though.

Saw your ATA post. Guess DU ran out of space to host the archives. Glad that was still there. I agree so much with what was going on then.

But didn't join as I was busy on a board created during the counting in Florida. It was a daily account of the stolen election of 2000 through the Selection of Bush by the SCOTUS and beyond.

Then it went into resisting the rightwingers and like DU, it was trolled relentlessly. It fell apart over the Clinton-Obama primaries and went offline in 2008 as the web host shut them all down.

Other affiliated boards began to go dead. Many Democrats walked away when Obama was elected as they thought he'd fix everything, although he begged people to go local and change things from the grassroots up.

In 2010 not a few Democrats fell into Infowars territory and the rest is history.

11. Thanks. From there: The Democratic Underground Manifesto

lib.er.al adj., belonging to the people, free, to grow up, rise 1. suitable for a free man; not restricted 2. giving freely; generous 3. large or plentiful; ample; abundant 4. not strict 5. tolerant of views differing from one's own; broad-minded 6. of democratic forms of government 7. favoring reform or progress; specif., favoring political reforms tending toward democracy and personal freedom for the individual; progressive

con.ser.va.tive adj., 1. preservative 2. tending to resist or oppose any changes in established traditions or institutions 3. generally large waisted 4. maligning people of different color, nationality, religion, and/or sexual orientation 5. feeling victimized by those of lower social standing 6. shouldering unusual amounts of paranoia/fireams 7. irrationally terrified of a) government subversion b) communist invasion c) homeless people

The conservatives have turned "liberal" into a dirty word, and we're taking it back. We of the Democratic Underground have decided the time has finally come to lower ourselves to their level. We're talking all out, balls-to-the-wall, light-the-fuse-and-stand-well-back thermonuclear partisan warfare.

No longer will we shrug our shoulders as Rush Limbaugh blithely tosses out another line about "liberal hypocrisy". No longer will we nod and smile politely as Robert Novak body-slams our ideals, kicks them in the crotch, and then pisses all over them.

They think that it's every man for himself, and screw you, Jim. They want the government to keep its nose out of your business - as long as your business isn't listening to rap music, or medical marijuana use, or preventing an unwanted pregnancy, or not wishing to be forced to pray in school. They want the States to have absolute control over their own destinies, as long as it doesn't get in the way of fixing a Presidential election (and they said Al Gore wanted to win at any cost).

They're hypocrites of the very worst kind. They think that claiming the high ground means you sling shit until there's a big enough pile to stand on.

Well we're sick of it. Not just because they're wrong, but because, let's face it, they're having way more fun than we are. Not only did they steal the election but they got to call us stupid while they were doing it, and now they're going to squander eight years of peace and prosperity.

Understand, it's not Democratic Underground's job to stop them - there are plenty of people around who are far better organized for that. But we can stop them from getting away with it. Every time an immigrant maid, or a tobacco company payoff, or an inconvenient DUI (or two) comes along, we'll remember - and we'll be here for you to vent your spleen. To paraphrase the greatest politician of our time: we feel your pain.

So let go of those bi-partisan feelings, people. Get in the forums and blow off some steam. It's time to stop beating ourselves up and start swinging in their direction...

The Staff of Democratic Underground

...from Top 10 Conservative Idiots

Rush Limbaugh - Okay, take a deep breath before reading this one. In a promo for his radio show last week, Rush was heard to announce, "If you take away the black vote, Bush won by a landslide". Now slowly, get back in your chair and re-read that. Breathe in. Breathe out. Now spit. That's good. While we understand that he would prefer democracy if only white men were allowed to vote, what Mount Rushmo' fails to have realized is that in Florida they DID take away the black vote and Bush STILL lost. Whoops. Talent on loan from God? More like talent on loan from Gallagher.

53. Equal Time with Bob Boudelang June 15, 2001!

https://web.archive.org/web/20010827023933/http://democraticunderground.com/bob/2001_bob_01.html

Equal Time with Bob Boudelang
June 15, 2001
by Bob Boudelang

In the interests of fairness and impartiality, we've decided that it's about time the conservatives had a voice on this website. So here he is - Bob Boudelang, American Patriot, with this week's rebuttal:

Bush (Who Did NOT Steal the White House!) and us Republicans is Right About the Energy Crisis, so there.
It is about time you ugly leftist Democrat socialists learned the Republican story about this nation's energy crisis and not the truth "put out" by ugly leftist Democrat socialists. We are in the grip of an energy crisis so severe that we must toss all concern for public health or the environment out the nearest window if we are ever going to continue to enjoy increased snowmobiling, jet-skis, NASCAR, neon lights, video card games and all the other necessities that make this modern country what it is today and always has been.

This crisis is the result of the Klintoon Administration not having any energy policy at all. That's why the first priority of George W. Bush, who did NOT steal the presidency, and his terrific Administration has been repealing all of the Klintoon Administration's energy conservation rules and initiatives. These rules and initiatives are no good, and anyway Slick Willie should have put them through years ago and not waited for the last minute to lay this obvious trap for George W. Bush who fell for it. This is just another example everyone can see of Democrat lies, like saying Bush is dumb because he fell for such an obvious trap! Get that straight!

We must open the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve and the National Parks for drilling because we are totally dependent on high-priced foreign oil, due to the fact that evil foreign oil companies like OPEC charge as much as our great American oil companies do. That way we can have fair competition and lower prices which is what made this country great. You socialists never talk about that, do you? What has any salmon done for you lately? The Arctic Reserve will give us six months worth of oil, so that we can continue to drive our SUV's without intrusive big government fuel efficiency.

It's our oil and you have no right telling us how we can waste it! And any way who needs the world climate and the global ecology nuts like the Sierra Club are shouting about. They are only a tiny minority that no one listens to, but you hardly ever hear about that because the leftist media, the FemiNazis, the pro-abortion crowd, the gun-grabbers, the blacks, other minorities, the intellectuals, the gays, the birdwatchers, the labor unions, the anti-smoking groups and other liberals all listen to them slavishly.

Meanwhile look at California. Those nuts are having rolling blackouts and energy problems statewide except where it is served by publicly regulated utilities, but the problem has nothing at all to do with the deregulation plan conservatives put in, which was not true deregulation as it was watered down by liberals. California needs MORE deregulation. That's as clear as the map with red states and blue states, which proves Bush didn't steal anything yet. Us other states have the problem of publicly regulated utilities so its important that we all deregulate before we can begin suffering California's problem too. It's environmental standards that cause California's high energy prices. They have nothing to do with the Democrat Socialists saying Republican campaign contributors charge the state's utilities rates for natural gas and generated electricity far above the prevailing market price elsewhere.

That's the free market, pal, and anyway if kooky California environmentalists hadn't made the utility companies there pass deregulation and sell off their power plants, they wouldn't be getting gouged like this. People in California have got to start taking responsibility for their own selves and stop expecting government to solve anything. This is America!

Another left wing loony lie is that the environmental standards are in California because of PG&E putting chromium in the drinking water like that Julia Child movie said, or the smog that comedians always talk about. There's only one word to explain why extremist Californios selfishly worry about their "health" and not about the economy of the rest of us, and that's an ugly one: environmentalism. They need Arnold Schwartznabor to say "Hasta negilah" to them, and soon, Baby!

Anyway, no one can deny summer is here and we will be suffering like California all over the country even if we don't fall for deregulation. That's why Bush slashed the Federal energy use standards for air conditioners. I wish he would get what he deserves for actions like this instead of this constant drumstick of criticism about stealing an election from leftists. When will you get it through your heads a majority doesn't mean ANYTHING in this country. Nuclear energy is completely safe, but as Senator Murkowski says, we must transfer the liability for damages from accidents and nuclear waste from the industry that profits from it to the taxpayer so that the industry can afford to build more without the threat of having to pay those damages.

What the anti-nuke kooks never say is the last catastrophic accident involving a reactor going out of control didn't kill anyone if you mean Three Mile Island and not Chernobyl. They have brought this proud industry to its knees like Monica Lewinsky servicing the president. Ha!

When I got shot in the ass by friendly fire in Grenada, I knew it was for the good of the country. Americans are just going to take it in the neck like I did for the next few years on soaring energy costs, and it has nothing to do with industry profits or outrageous salaries for executives. I wish you would stop saying that and pull together for the good of this great president, his brother who had nothing to do with it, and the rest of the Republican party in the future. Amen.

Bob Boudelang is a patriotic American patriot who wants nothing to do with liberals. He is a NRA life member and has been treasurer of his local VFW chapter and he resigned like Newt did and no charges were ever filed, so get that straight.

There was no other liberal/Democrat website. I used to troll FR for entertainment. The right had several including the Michael Reagan site. I like to think I helped shut it down after Reagan had enough of the trolling.

During the FL recount in 2000, Mike Novak touted the results of an online CNN poll that said Gore should concede. FR had "freeped" it and Novak touted it. That was before people understood online polls weren't nevessarily accurate.

Seems like ages ago.

I think I came aboard a few months after this. Groped my way there through a sea of denialists and bush/cheney worshippers and leftover Clinton-haters on the far wrong. It was SO incredibly refreshing and reaffirming to find a whole pool of people who felt the same way I did about what had just been stolen from Al Gore - and from us all. It verified for me that I wasn't alone in the way I saw things. Far from it. One of the best discoveries I ever made online. Even to this very day!

That was back in the day when we also had a site called Media Whores Online. That one was great, too!

75. the mad libs still work!

I just did one

George Has Breakfast

Morning had broken at the White House, and it looked as if today would be particularly malodorous. George W. Bush leaned over, vaporized his wife, and climbed out of bed. "WHO'S YOUR HUCKLEBERRY?!" he whooped. "What a pleasure it is to be in charge of puttering the country. Praise be to Nut!"

George dressed and headed down to the breakfast room. "Good morning Mr. President!" said the steward upon his arrival. "We have your favorite this morning - creosote on toast with a side of angry geese." George sat down. "Squawk! !" he yelled. "Is this orange juice? You know I only drink tequila with my breakfast!"

Suddenly the disposable diaper burst open and Dick Cheney appeared. George leaped from his chair and crossed the room. He grasped the Vice President's left butt cheek, and shook vigorously. "Dick!" he cried. "Great to see you! How goes it?" The Vice President smiled floppily. "Not too bad, Mr. President," he said. "Today you're going to be interviewed on Americas Funniest Videos ."

George grinned. "That's great Dick - it's great to be President. I can honestly feel people looking up to me the same way that I look up to Rachel Maddow or fritz the cat," he said. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go brush my nostrils."

As George left, the Vice President felt a tear come to his eye. "That planaria is going to be the best damn hobby lobby clerk this country has ever seen," he whispered.

THE END.

80. Now a word from Skinner

DAY 1 (SAT) - A GIFT FROM MSNBC
On Friday night, we were up until about 3:00am getting ready for the website's big Inaugural Day Launch. We were hoping to be in bed by midnight, but our intern — a young radical from one of the local community colleges — spilled paint all over our banner at around 11:30, and we had to start from scratch. EarlG thought the intern was trying to sniff the stuff, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were true (he kept mumbling something about how "acrylic lasts longer than this latex crap", but we weren't clear on the context). The rest of us are too old for that sort of thing, but we'll keep him around because he is the only one here that knows anything about programming perl. (Fortunately, he got the "Nuclear Button" script working by 10:00pm, before the can of paint arrived.)

On Saturday, we met at our makeshift "office" in Northwest DC sometime around 11:00am. We were supposed to meet at 9:30, but the intern overslept. He showed up with his own homemade "George W. Ass" sign, but we wouldn't let him bring it to the protests — Newshound thought it was "off message."

We got down to Pennsylvania avenue around noon, and were fortunate to claim a prime location right in front of the press bleachers. Protesters were confined to a few "designated protest areas," and it seemed strange to me that one of those spots would be right in front of the media. I guess the communications geniuses in the Bush camp didn't think of everything. The other protesters seemed to be a mishmash of left-wing types: Some dancing polar bears to protest oil drilling in ANWR; Some free-Mumia folks; Anti-death penalty activists; A pretty large contingent of Seattle-style anti-globalization college kids; and even a guy on stilts to protest, well, I don't know what he was protesting. Like us, lots of folks were protesting how Bush stole the election, but there were far fewer of us than I expected. A sizable chunk of the protesters I spoke with voted for Nader. I thought, if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be out here freezing my ass off in the rain. But I digress.

While ostensibly there to protest, our real motivation for attending the event was to get our banner on television. (We have no money, and this was the cheapest national advertising campaign we could come up with.) The banner was eight feet long by 3 feet tall, white canvas, with the words "DemocraticUnderground.com" painted in big, black letters. With luck, some Good Democrats would see it on TV and stop by our website, which at this point was sitting unused on a server somewhere in Atlanta (I think).

Sometime between noon and 1:00, EarlG's cell phone rang. His wife yelled into his ear: "Stop shaking the banner!" She, and about a million other people, were watching us on MSNBC. A preliminary count turned up exactly four messages on our discussion board. The first one: "Nice f------ discussion board. There's nobody here." By the end of the day, there would be nearly a thousand posts.

Eventually Dubya's limo drove by our part of the parade route. It was going so fast that the secret service guys were in a full sprint. We decided to pack it up and go back to the office. The intern stayed behind to get some more of "that quality doobidge from the polar bears."

Back in the office around 5:00, we discovered our message boards had become a virtual food fight, and our inbox was bursting with messages like: Your the people who are whats wrong with this country. Why dont you go back to Rusia? [sic] Plus, we'd sent over 2,000 angry emails to conservatives using our innovative "Nuclear Button" one-click activism system.

Spent the evening patting ourselves on the back. That is, all of us except the intern, who spent the evening eating 3 loaves of Wonder bread.

Around 6am, EarlG woke up in a cold sweat. Apparently, one can only read so many you-are-what's-wrong-with-this-country emails before it starts to affect your sleep. He banged out a short diatribe he called "Some Important Things You Should Know About Democratic Underground," smoked a cigarette, and went back to bed, exhausted.

We regrouped in the office around 1pm. Newshound thought the so-called "6am rant" was virtually unusable — too filled with anti-conservative vitriol — and threatened to walk if EG didn't back down. Soon enough, EG had Newshound in a headlock, the intern got a bloody nose, and $1000 worth of computer equipment lay smashed on the floor. All agreed it was time to switch to decaf. (Except the intern, who refuses to drink coffee at all.)

Meanwhile, the conservatives had taken over our boards. It was a thrill to see so many people fighting it out in our virtual three-ring circus, but we started to worry whether this was any way to run a Democratic discussion board. (Not much discussion, not many Democrats.) A few of our loyal visitors tipped us off to the fact that some of the well established conservative message boards had targeted us for some serious harrassment. As EarlG would later say, "they came to our house, sprayed obscenities all over the walls, and left porn in our mailbox." Something had to be done.

I (foolishly) argued that we should sit by and "see if it passes on its own." EarlG knew better, "close them all off, require everyone to register. That's the only way to stop it." The righties screamed bloody murder on the message boards, claiming that their "rights" were being infringed. As if. Basically, all we were asking them to do was leave a fake name and fake email address before they burned our house down.

Spent the evening deleting offensive posts in the message board. Left around 1am.

Total page views by the end of today: 49,302
Number of copies of the U.S. Constitution faxed to our office: exactly 1

DAY 3 (MON) - COMING AT US WITH GUNS BLAZING
The waves of conservatives were stemmed somewhat by our decision to register people on Sunday, but not much. By Monday afternoon, we were experiencing a full-on conservative takeover of the boards. We wondered when some big Democratic websites would start sending us visitors. (Answer: There are no big Democratic websites.) We got a good few visitors from www.BartCop.com, a Dem site, but they paled in comparison to the raging hordes coming from the right. Our slash-and-burn campaign of block-and-delete was holding them at bay, but it was taking a toll on morale.

The intern decided to bag his job at Taco Bell today in order to "watch the fights" on the message boards. We didn't take this as a good sign.

92. Wow I Never Knew How Close DU Came To Failing...

By failing I mean being taken over by rethugs as well as the lack of Democrats & Democratic Websites that were around in those days.

I am so proud of DU & our members. I literally grew up on DU, I registered & became addicted to DU in 2004 at the age of 14. I have learned so much on DU and I love this site & it has contributed to the great & knowledgeable Democrat I have become.

Thank-you for never giving up on DU!!!

113. Thank All Of You For Teaching Me & Testing Me Along The Way!

I can say without doubt that I am a better person for having been a part of the DU Universe growing up.

Through the good times and the darkest of hours DU has always been the one constant in my life.

I would not be the person I am today without not only DemocraticUnderground but the members who post here. It is from people like you that have taught me to listen and learn, especially when we disagree.

Many have took me under their wing(s) helping me out in ways that will be forever etched in my memory, others have taught me what at a young age I was yet to understand and that is that failue at some point in my life is inevitable, but giving up is simply unforgivable, and boy they were right.

I was told not only what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to know. So many of you challenged me to stand up and speak out for what is right, even if and when it wasn't popular to do so.

My debt to DU and the DU family is beyond measure. I am proud of them and this site. I was given an education here that I would have otherwise never been taught in a classroom or learned from any number of text books.

So I say simply enough, thank-you to all who have taught & tested me. Thank-You to the creaters of DU who never gave up even when the right wingers did everything in their power to disrupt & disrespect this site hoping that the Admins would simply call it a lost cause and shut it down.

I am proud to be a product of DU!

84. First found a link to DU on the website of the late, lamented AIR AMERICA Radio.

Heard about the launch of AIR AMERICA through some MSM media story.

You used to be able to stream their shows directly from that site for short periods. That was my only way of tuning in, as I live in France.

Just before the 2004 election, I discovered the DU link somewhere on the AA site.

Started lurking a lot, especially after the disastrous election results--needed some moral support.

We overseas democrats were so sure Kerry would win after the deplorable first term of the Shrub.

Got a new computer in mid-2005 and decided to sign up.

And well, AIR AMERICA is history, but DU lives long and propers!

85. Many DU1 threads are still readable through archive links on DU1.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/cgi-bin/duforum/duboard.cgi?az=lobby

(Big forum archive links at the bottom of that page - many small forums have archive links in the upper right when you visit the forum.)
____

For example, two of the earliest threads I could find:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/cgi-bin/duforum/duboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=1&forum=DCForumID22&archive=yes
(Jan-26-01)

106. Weird. I get a thread titled "History shows we'll probably take House and Senate"...

... from that first thread link.
_________

The error message does ask you politely to notify the administrator. It almost seems rude not to.

...but many of the threads seem to not be accessible. I remember years ago, seeing LBN (or GD) for 9/11/01, and the first mention of the attacks had the thread title of "Turn On CNN Right NOW!!!"

99. DU manefesto

The Democratic Underground Manifesto

lib.er.al adj., belonging to the people, free, to grow up, rise 1. suitable for a free man; not restricted 2. giving freely; generous 3. large or plentiful; ample; abundant 4. not strict 5. tolerant of views differing from one's own; broad-minded 6. of democratic forms of government 7. favoring reform or progress; specif., favoring political reforms tending toward democracy and personal freedom for the individual; progressive

con.ser.va.tive adj., 1. preservative 2. tending to resist or oppose any changes in established traditions or institutions 3. generally large waisted 4. maligning people of different color, nationality, religion, and/or sexual orientation 5. feeling victimized by those of lower social standing 6. shouldering unusual amounts of paranoia/fireams 7. irrationally terrified of a) government subversion b) communist invasion c) homeless people

110. Takes me back

to a time when I was so angry about the theft of the White House that I just couldn't contain it. I think this spot helped me cope.
I found DU on Bartcop March 2nd with Top Ten Conservative Idiots and have been here ever since. I don't post a lot but lurk all the time. I remember some of the pie fights here back then about Ralph Nader and the LIHOP and MIHOP re 9/11, not to mention the hair pulling about voting issues after Bush and Kerry. I have to laugh when people wonder about the infighting and why we can't get along. We never just got along but I think we used to discuss with a lot more humor.

I still miss Bob Boudalang.

112. Thanks for the memories!

I was just a lurker then, having found the site through some forum or other (I think it was the low carb forum I was lurking on). This place got me through a lot of bad times during Dumbya's reign of idiocy, let me tell you. When 911 happened, I spent the day here crying with people I knew understood what I was feeling.
