None of the witnesses at the Flatbush Ave. fast-food joint many of whom were cheering during the after-school onslaught dialed 911, though McDonalds workers did call, police said.
One callous onlooker even joked as the girl lay on the floor, Yo, shes dead. Its a murder!
And even though every punch, gasp and cheer was captured on video, the girls who carried out the brutal beatdown may never be charged since witnesses refuse to speak up.

FWIW I have witnessed similar fights, with spectators cheering them on. I would be interested in hearing from those who know more about this phenomenon.

(1,858 posts)The bystander effect occurs when the presence of others hinders an individual from intervening in an emergency situation. Social psychologists Bibb Latané and John Darley popularized the concept following the infamous 1964 Kitty Genovese murder in Kew Gardens, New York. Genovese was stabbed to death outside her apartment three times, while bystanders who observed the crime did not step in to assist or call the police. Latané and Darley attributed the bystander effect to the diffusion of responsibility (onlookers are more likely to intervene if there are few or no other witnesses) and social influence (individuals in a group monitor the behavior of those around them to determine how to act).

The "bystanders" were cheering them on, taking pictures, and treating it like a show.
ohnoyoudidnt
(1,858 posts)The social influence part could have started with one person cheering and a few others joining in, perhaps the people cheering were also friends of the suspects and not random strangers.

Like watching Beatrix Kiddo slice through 30 people in Kill Bill, WSHH is a trainwreck and you find yourself being unable to look away. There's no rational reason behind it.

(10,362 posts)And yeah, I do believe that violent movies sate the human desire to see blood spilled. Perhaps we spilled blood for so many thousands of years, it's in our omnivorous DNA. We don't even kill our own food today. Maybe WSHH fills the gap for some of us.
You seem like someone who isn't effected by it, which is a good thing I think

Rudy Giuliani says Obama should be more like Bill Cosby, blames Brooklyn McDonald's fight, Ferguson cop shootings on President
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/giuliani-blames-obama-mcdonald-fight-shootings-article-1.2146983
Just when you thought Rudy Giuliani couldn't get crazier, the former NYC mayor blamed Obama for the brutal beatdown at a Brooklyn McDonalds and said the president should be more like Bill Cosby.
Obama is ignoring enormous amounts of crime committed by African-Americans, Giuliani said Thursday. And he said President Obama is to blame for the brawl inside a McDonalds in Brooklyn as well as the shooting of two cops in Ferguson because of the anti-police "tone" coming from the White House.
The former mayor, speaking on AM970 radio this morning, was asked what he thought about a number of disturbing issues in the news.

(11,833 posts)Violent crime is lower than it's been since the 1950's. The world is less at war than at any time in the 20th century. Far fewer people go to bed hungry now than since the first World War. The numbers have been going steadily down since the 1970's. Scientists are working on cutting the numbers in half every decade and now believe we can drop it to nearly zero.
For every negative thing we read about or see on the internet, there's acts of kindness. I think our sense of fear and dread can get heightened when we focus almost solely on the negative stuff. I'm no pollyanna, but I read a lot of history. Violence has existed since the beginning of recorded history. Surely before that too.
None of what I've said is meant to excuse or condone the actions of those kids in that video. It's horrendous & troubling & saddening. I truly hope they will learn from it and not keep doing that crap. Thank goodness no one was killed.

(4,926 posts)I usually look for big guys that have looks of horror and compassion on their face to join me by going, "lets break this up before it gets ugly". I always get some of them to help me. It does work.
It happens so fast and escalates so quickly that most of the time people feel helpless, so joining forces works.
only got hit once in the face once, I had the chicks arm behind her back so fast her head spun around with a look of horror.
I told, her I am not going to hurt you, unless you hurt me.

This jumped out at me, "RUDY GIULIANI BLAMES BROOKLYN MCDONALD'S FIGHT ON OBAMA, SAYS PRESIDENT SHOULD BE MORE LIKE BILL COSBY." You mean they'll be nicer if they're all drugged and raped, Rudy? Want that to happen to your wife and kids, Rudy?
Those kids don't need the victim to identify them. Teachers, parents, and other adults will.

(466 posts)This is depressing in so many ways. I didn't realize that brutality was in such demand as a spectator sport. Might as well bring out the lions and gladiators and really put on a show for all the bloodthirsty fans cheering for more blood and mayhem. Put it on You Tube so everyone can share in the fun. Repulsive.

(20,356 posts)Just imagining myself in this situation, say I step in and try to pull the assailants off the girl. Then the assailants, all teenage girls, attack me.
I know I COULD defend myself if absolutely necessary, but do I dare fight back? If one of them knees me in the balls, would punching her in the face then make me the bad guy? Do I then end up on Youtube as the asshole grown man beating up a few girls? Beyond that, I'm a white guy, so would I get stereotyped as a racist to boot?
I can see where some people would freeze up instead of coming to the rescue, with these thoughts running through their heads.
On the other hand, I could see my Puerto Rican wife kicking their asses six ways from Sunday if they so much laid a finger on her

(20,356 posts)Men generally aren't "allowed" to use physical force against women in our society, even in justifiable self-defense such as the example I gave.

A bartendar, of course, has all that to hand. Probably not be timely enough for the rest of us. If you're standing there with a soda maybe you could pull out a chunk of ice and drop it down her blouse for the same affect.
I would even consider throwing a drink in her face. But that is an actual physical attack, albeit non-harmful, and likely to initiate a different fight with you now the target.

(78,249 posts)Two weeks later, a newspaper article reported the circumstances of Genovese's murder and the lack of reaction from numerous neighbors. The common portrayal of her neighbors as being fully aware of what was transpiring but completely unresponsive has since been criticized as inaccurate. Nonetheless, that portrayal prompted investigation into the social psychological phenomenon that has become known as the bystander effect or "Genovese syndrome", especially diffusion of responsibility.
