Wife of NC State Senator says Amendment One is necessary ‘to protect the Caucasian race’

http://pamshouseblend.firedoglake.com/2012/05/02/wife-of-nc-state-senator-says-amendment-one-is-necessaryto-protect-the-caucasian-race/

…Nance paraphrased the remarks, as told to him by those who were present: “During the conversation, Ms. Brunstetter said her husband was the architect of Amendment 1, and one of the reasons he wrote it was to protect the Caucasian race. She said Caucasians or whites created this country. We wrote the Constitution. This is about protecting the Constitution. There already is a law on the books against same-sex marriage, but this protects the Constitution from activist judges.”

Nance said he recruited a friend, who works for the Coalition to Protect All North Carolina Families, to witness his interview with Jodie Brunstetter. He said Brunstetter reluctantly acknowledged that she had used the term “Caucasian” and then repeated the statement previously attributed to her, but substituted the pronoun “we” for “Caucasian. Nance said Brunstetter insisted there was nothing racial about her remarks, but could not explain why she used the term “Caucasian.”

Alberta just finished Provincial elections. By all polls the Wild Rose party was a shoe-in for a majority government. Then one of their less-disciplined candidates announced that as a Caucasian, he would be better able to represent his constituents as opposed to his opponents (one was Pakistani, can't remember the other one). Another candidate was discovered to have a homophobic website.

After the dust had settled, three days later, the dragged-to-the-centre Progressive Conservative Party won a majority.

have done over the years, is tell their people (tea-partiers, I suppose) to procreate their livin' brains out.

If you want to be on top of the world, you have to be there. If there aren't enough of you, then that's no one's fault but your own. If others pass you by, well, that's just too damn bad.

Her statements above are truly stupid. I'm glad she's & her friends have been slow in procreating.

Doesn't she or her husband know that outlawing gay marriage will not make gay people straight? Likewise, gay marriage doesn't make people gay.

The population ratio of Caucasians versus non-Caucasians will no neither up or down regardless of the result of the initiative. What is the real logic behind their actions?

Am I giving them too much credit by ascribing the ability to reason and process information logically and objectively?

It's because if they can invalidate gay marriages, they can invalidate other ones - interracial ones. That's the thinking behind this kind of bullshit legislation, and this woman just proved it.

would repeat that among her friends there was a concern that whites would be wiped out as a race by the end of this century. I think this fear is one of the reasons why there was such a drive a few years back to use the dog whistle words, "legacy" and "heritage," to push the very kind of agenda which seems to have inspired this Amendment One.

NC used to be such a nice place. My partner and I are actually thinking about walking away from our house and land to be somewhere else. First good-paying job in a blue state that comes along, fuckit, we're walking.

Caswell County, about 45-50 minutes from Durham. But thanks for the encouragement. It's hard not to be down about this. I'm getting old and want to be a citizen in my lifetime, WITH my husband. I don't see why that's too much to ask. But the wackogelical/klan/peepants-party voters are determined to claw their way to the top if they have to stomp on everyone else to do it.

If they were worth a goddam, they'd already be there. But they ain't. Tiresome lot.

We'll beat amendment one, I hope, because it's nakedly hateful, but you're right in that actual marriage equality in NC is at least 10 years away.

It does sound like leaving is probably a better solution than the long slog that will be. I just hate the thought that we lose good progressives here because they are assholes, because it feels like rewarding them.

Which was handy for me. My partner spent a good part of the year last year (and a couple of spells this year) in hospital. Whilst I was unemployed it was convenient to run favorite foods, clean jammies, etc over. I work in High Point now, so that makes a bigdang circle from Caswell County to HP to Durham and back home.

We've had experience with quite a few healthcare systems. Nothing in Florida and very little in NC touches the quality of care he's getting at Duke. The problem with changing states is that he has to start all over again with Medicaid and Ryan White. Sometimes that could be months- to a year-long wait. He can't do without care that long. (I almost lost him when we moved back to NC.) All that being said, you see why we have to be careful about EXACTLY what system is available wherever we'd go and what the level of care is.

We love Vermont, but his constitution won't last through one of those winters. Oregon and Washington state are "on the list" for climate, certainly, but we haven't yet investigated what kind of systems there are and how good they are.

Then there's the matter of my finding an appropriate job. Then there is the matter of relocating with our six dogs. Just can't go get any apartment. 'T'ain't easy when there is so much to consider.

But I would gladly walk the steps not to be an official second-class to non-citizen. Those teapot SOBs gladly take our higher tax-rate money, but they don't want to give personhood in return.

Burns my ass that corporations are "people" but gay people are not.

Just not equal. Separate but unequal, which is how a lot of folks in the south like to treat folks they don't like. So much for our supposed neighborliness and hospitality.

I'm sure you have all the bases covered with medical powers of atty and so forth, and that the folks at Duke who deliver HIV+ care are, I imagine, probably the last folks who would pull the whole "you cannot visit because you're not family" bullshit.

I'm a stay at home dad, and four of my friends are lesbian couples who are married, but not recognized in NC. Aside from all the medical stuff, there's a lot of issues regarding children that would not be served well by this amendment.

I think the good news is that younger conservatives with libertarian tendencies are against this. This makes for some unusual allies--hopefully, the progressives and libertarian types will outnumber the social conservatives and low-information voters. I think this whoe thing wasn't done because of hatred--well, not JUST hatred--but also because they wanted to gin up conservative turnout. I think it's backfired, and mobilized the people who want to live in the 21st century. Here in durham, we have had record turnout for an uncontested Democratic primary, and, when you add us to the other blue spots and factor in the fact that the GOP nomination is decided, there's a good chance.

I wish you and you partner well-it sounds like he's got every chance you can give him.

If they can invalidate one kind of marriage, they can invalidate another one - interracial marriages. It never stops where conservatives say it stops. This is just more evidence of the thinking behind the push against gay marriage, just like anti-choice isn't going to just stop with abortion - it was always about controlling women, making birth control illegal, etc.

Her view is probably that African Americans don't get married anyway. They just shack up and produce children so they can get welfare and food stamps, right? So the one man, one woman thing is really all about one white man, one white woman and forcing gay whites to enter into straight marriages and procreate. They really don't understand homosexuality at all.

They might really and truly be afraid of the day coming soon when brown people outnumber white people in the USA. That means that every single white gay person must marry and procreate NOW dammit. It's the patriotic thing to do!!!

and in case anybody needed it. But I don't doubt that there are RW wackos out there who believe like that.

To a conservative, Caucasian and "white" are the opposite of racial -- the absence of race, even. That's because Caucasians are "normal," and racial groups -- the ones with darker skin, who actually have a "race" -- they're *not* normal. I hope that clears up any confusion.

The fact that these people are still here just means we have to keep fighting.

The upside, if there is one, is that this strips these people of plausible deniability. Most of the young people and folks from out of state (our biggest source of in-migration is New York) are not on this wavelength. These sorts of people are increasingly becoming pariahs. The only reason they took the General Assembly was because of an unsusually old white electorate in 2010 that will not be repeated because these people are dying off.

I mean who wants to be caucasian any more? A whole industry has been developed to give color-deficient people a little tone. And we caucasians look old well before our time.

On a different note, when someone talks about preserving the caucasian race, I assume they are Nazis.

And still another note, a poster upthread has it right, Admendment I is about 1man/1woman, that is "one man over one woman". You never hear trad marriage defined as one woman-one man, never.

But their "rightness" of their lies and fantasies can never be challenged without a violent explosion/implosion on their part. They do not have the mental/emotional capacity to be in charge of anything, let alone our world.
