Don’t choose hate

Amendment One isn’t about marriage. The fact is, as much as it pains me to say it, there will be tomatoes growing on Mars before we would see an elected judge or elected legislature in North Carolina changing the state law which bans marriage equality. And that is the only protection to marriage that Amendment One offers. If a federal judge or the Congress were to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act this amendment would offer no protection at all.

This amendment will, with 100 percent certainty, eliminate health benefits for some number of people who are currently getting them. It will, at least for some amount of time, put in danger domestic violence laws protecting people who aren't married.

Hopefully your letter, and many of the sane ones in the N&O, will get through to enough voters.

You may have gotten quite a few voters to switch columns with this. Thanks for speaking out in such a well-reasoned way.

There is good reason for suspicion that getting an amendment in place is a right-wing step toward attacking Loving next.

I wouldn't doubt that for an instant.
