1. it is part of the agreement to build amazon distribution centers in Tennessee

The previous governor made an agreement with incentives for Amazon; the brick and mortor retailers thought it was unfair that Amazon didn't charge taxes since they have a "presence" in the state, there was some bro-ha-ha, next year they will start charging taxes, this year you get to self-report it. They base sales tax on where it is delivered to, not the address where the credit card is from, which I don't agree with.

when you fill out your state taxes in Illinois they want you to claim anything you bought off the internet, so they can charge you tax. Anyone who does is an idiot. Let them prove I bought that book off Amazon.

Most states with a sales tax expect residents who avoid paying it in some way (such as ordering something for their own use through mail order like Amazon) to report and pay "use tax" which is the sales tax. It's usually done on the "honor system" meaning most people don't do it.

In the future, Amazon will collect the sales tax and remit it to the state, making this unnecessary as far as Amazon purchases go.

This isn't revenue to Amazon. They just collect it and send it to Tennessee.

It's part of the deal Amazon made with Texas to avoid back taxes.

You must pay 6% on everything you buy out of state or order online from out of state.
