Ex-DC councilman sentenced to more than 3 years
WASHINGTON (AP) A former District of Columbia councilmember has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison for stealing more than $350,000 in government funds.
Harry Thomas Jr. was sentenced on Thursday in federal court in Washington.
Prosecutors had asked for a term of nearly four years. Thomas' lawyers requested an 18-month prison sentence.
Thomas pleaded guilty in January to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars earmarked for youth sports and arts programs. Thomas had been a longtime advocate for youth sports. He resigned his seat after the charges were filed, and submitted a letter of apology before the sentencing hearing.
His sentencing comes amid ongoing federal investigations into the use of funds in the political campaigns of D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and Council Chairman Kwame Brown.
