Legendary Broadway star Audra McDonald takes Governor Mike Pence to the woodshed

Mar 26, 2015 5:17pm PDT by Steven Payne

Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald gave Indiana's Republican Governor, Mike Pence an epic take-down on Twitter this afternoon. In response to Pence signing the right to discriminate into law today, this brilliantly talented star has claimed a piece of her own history in the fight for equality.

On the phone w/@united so long I forgot what year it was, then saw the law Indiana Gov.Pence just signed & remembered...It's 1950 #NOHATE

.@GovPenceIN Some in my band are gay & we have 2 gigs in your state next month. Should we call ahead to make sure the hotel accepts us all?

— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015

.@GovPenceIN or could you maybe send us a list of where its okay for us to go? Might the law apply to me?(I'm black).

— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015

.@GovPenceIN or maybe I should fire my gay band members just to be on the safe side.

.@GovPenceIN Or MAYBE...we need to stick to singing in states that don't legislate hate?

She was in Indianapolis just last fall. The concert was not well-publicized for some reason and it was sold out when I tried to get tickets. I've seen her before, and she has a terrific show.

I predict a lot more singers, bands, theater groups, etc., will refuse to perform in Indiana because of this repugnant law. And that is most definitely their right.

Brava, Ms. McDonald, although your tweets are falling on deaf ears. All Mike (and the General Assembly) cares about is pandering to his fundie base. The man is absolutely clueless about how much damage this will cause.

New state slogan: Indiana -- Ignorant and Proud Of It!

We went to a concert she gave here in Chapel Hill recently. She talked about LGBT equality from the stage
and the history of the civil rights struggle and related it to her own personal situation (her husband is white)
and how not so many years ago THAT wasn't allowed in some states.

She was in last year's Sound of Music Live and saved that show. Her voice is absolutely amazing.

I love the #NOHATE that she added to her posts.
