Funky Winkerbean comic strip goes to the Prom. Introduce a gay couple who wants to attend.

This just started today although all this week Becky's mom has been doing stuff with the PTA at the school. Becky's mom is one of those busybody's who always into everyone's business and causing a stink about something so I'm guessing this arc will get some play. But Tom Batiuk has never shied away from any topic in the strip.

Comic strip’s gay prom date story courts controversy

A historic high school prom is coming up on Friday — in the long-running comic strip “Funky Winkerbean.”

A story line that began running Monday in 400 newspapers nationwide involves a same-sex couple announcing their intention to attend the prom at fictional Westview High. "So who are you guys taking to the prom anyway?’’ a female character asks.

"Uh, that would be each other,’’ comes the reply from a male couple holding hands.

The aftermath of the announcement divides both the school and its community. But it's far from the first divisive issue that “Winkerbean” cartoonist Tom Batiuk has explored. The comic, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last month, has also tackled such hot-button topics as alcoholism, teen pregnancy, suicide, bullying and the death penalty.

As has been tweeted, people who don't know what their cat is thinking will presume to know the mind of God in the week to come. And while global climate change is (in what passes for their minds) still a debatable point,* the appearance of a comic strip will be the harbinger of DOOOOOOOM for the United States and everything that everybody ever loved.

*Dang if there haven't been a lot tornados this year for some reason.
