Should you ever apply for the same job more than once?

A friend of mine and I were having a discussion and we both have considered reapplying for positions that we never heard from after the initial application.

What is yoru opinion?

And I was stood up for an interview 3 times for the job (by the same guy).

So I sent an email to the head of the company, got an interview (with someone else) and got hired on the spot.

Maybe even add a note of, "I WILL NOT BE IGNORED" to the bottom of your resume.

Don't know if you were joking or not Cap'n, but my experience with hiring is that a confrontational statement like that is about the same as writing "please throw this resume straight in the trash". There are many reasons why you may not have been contacted after submitting your resume for a position but being ignored is probably not one. Unless you tell me that you won't be ignored, at which point my natural contrariness kicks in and yes, I WILL ignore you. Remember, odds are there are many applicants for the position and employers are looking for any reason to eliminate a candidate. Having said that though, a second application never hurts.

I applied for a job with the Department of Labor in 1992. I had the interview, they like me but went with another candidate. A year later the job was open again, I applied and got the job.

I really wanted to work with that organization so I think it can be a good idea to try again.

Also, where you never heard back, yay or nay, why not try again?

Best of luck to you both in any event.

#1, if you were close last time, a 2nd visit is like a reunion if you are interviewing with the same person.
#2, if you weren't close last time, who knows if the same person is still doing the hiring.

And either way, a 2nd visit makes you appear eager for the job, which should be appealing to an employer.

Fair or not, we typically hired whoever walked through the door when when we needed somebody.

Some places have slower paced hiring procedures that can take months and reapplying during the process would be counterproductive.

So, "it depends".

lots of stuff go on in the hiring process that have nothing to do with you qualifications. apply and apply. But do review your resume - make sure it's tip top. Don't reapply with a bad cover letter and resume.

but in general, Yes you should reapply for a position if you have never heard anything from the initial application. I am not sure if you apply online or by sending in a application, faxing a resume' etc. That also has some effect on your application and even if you can reapply.
