Gotta Love Connecticut and Gov Dan Malloy!

Connecticut Becomes First State To Boycott Indiana Over LGBT Discrimination Law

snip//

WASHINGTON -- Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D) will sign an executive order on Monday barring state-funded travel to Indiana because of the state's new law that could allow businesses to turn away gay and lesbian customers for religious reasons.

Malloy announced his plans on Twitter.

6. AWESOME! K&R all over the place!

I thought Washington did too, no?

Regardless, this is awesome. Especially since the religious fanatics and gop are using Connecticut as an example of one of the states with the same law.

Buzzfeed has some examples of the best reactions to the discriminatory law. Here's one from a Bakery there

The Atlantic put out an article showing how the laws differ since the GOP is using the fact 19 states have them.

34. Yes, we have the "same" law, BUT we also have a law that prohibits...

...discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, among other things.

I believe Connecticut was the first to have these laws, passed more than 20 years ago.

Off the subject, but Connecticut is also the first state to create a Commission on Human Rights and Opportunity (equivalent to the Federal EEOC)

42. I used bad wording there

I know that none of the other state's laws called RFRA are as blatantly obvious in the purpose to discriminate. Similar should have been the word, not same. Even Texas isn't as bad as indiana's.

18. Would he have signed this executive order if the UCONN MBB team was heading to this year's Final 4?

This was an easy move by Gov. Malloy this year. I doubt he would have pissed off UCONN fans if the MBB team was on it way to defend it's 2014 title in Indianapolis this year.

He's called for the NCAA to move next year's WBB Final 4 from Indianapolis. It will be interesting to see what the NCAA does if IN's law remains on the books.

19. Yes, it will be interesting to see what the NCAA does If Indiana's law remains.

I have no idea of Gov Malloy would be willing to piss off UConn fans if things were different, Larkspur, but, I like what he had to say about his EO against discrimination. And, he was the first State.. now we have Washington and I don't know of any others.

. . . of Indianapolis for this year's tournament.

The last 3 games of this event could be moved to a different location easily!!!!!!!!!!

I think the next Supreme Court Judge should be openly gay, just to drive the point home!

"Today, I direct all agencies, departments, boards and commissions to immediately review all requests for state funded or state sponsored travel to the State of Indiana and to bar any such publicly funded travel that is not essential to the enforcement of state law or public health and safety. The ban on publicly funded travel shall take effect immediately.

38. That is! I saw that earlier but hadn't caught the Coach's name.. So I googled Kevin Ollie..

UConn president tells coach Kevin Ollie he can't travel to Indy meeting

Connecticut men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie and his staff will not travel to the Final Four in Indianapolis this week.

UConn President Susan Herbst announced the decision Tuesday night, reacting to Indiana's controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the subsequent travel ban for State of Connecticut employees issued by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Monday.

snip//

"In support of Governor Malloy's travel ban to the state of Indiana, Kevin Ollie and other members of the UConn men's basketball staff will not travel to Indianapolis for the NCAA Final Four and events surrounding it," Herbst said in a statement. "UConn is a community that values all of our members and treats each person with the same degree of respect, regardless of their background and beliefs and we will not tolerate any other behavior."

State Sen. Richard Madaleno sought the ban, but his request was immediately turned down by the GOP governor.
