The U.S. and China forged the outlines of a deal Friday to end a diplomatic standoff over legal activist Chen Guangcheng, with Beijing saying he can apply to go abroad for study and Washington saying he has been offered an American fellowship.
After three days of fraught, behind-the-scenes and emotional calls by Chen from a guarded hospital room, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said progress had been made in granting the activist's wish to take his family abroad.

Beijing (CNN) -- A possible breakthrough emerged Friday in the case of Chen Guangcheng, the Chinese activist who made a daring escape from house arrest and took refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing before venturing out amid negotiations over his future.
The Chinese government said he could apply to travel to the United States to study -- a development that the United States instantly cited as an encouraging sign of progress in what has been a thorny and controversial impasse.
...
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Chen has been offered a fellowship from an American university "where he can be accompanied by his wife and two children."
"The Chinese government has indicated that it will accept Mr. Chen's applications for appropriate travel documents," she said. "The United States government expects that the Chinese government will expeditiously process his applications for these documents, and make accommodations for his current medical condition. The United States government would then give visa requests for him and his immediate family priority attention.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte is calling for the United States to grant asylum to a Chinese dissident involved in a growing international controversy.
Fearing for the safety of his family and himself, Chen Guangcheng told ABC News on Thursday that he wants to come to the United States and even went so far as to ask for a seat aboard Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's plane when she visited China on a diplomacy mission.

(53,661 posts)Then, and only then, does M$M find it newsworthy. There's an old Chinese proverb that when a leader does things, he should set it up so that the people will say, 'We did this ourselves,' instead of taking credit.
Obama is not 1% of the self-promoter and salesman that just one of the GOP opposing him have been. Because really, when you're getting good things done that is the true reward, not praise by others.
It's good how this turned out for this man and his family and he and they may be able to teach the Americans they come into contact some valuable lessons about the world.

(20,814 posts)see what it has to say. What's that that's coming to me now? Ah, yes, here we go!:
"It is disgraceful that Obama is giving a citizen of a communist country a scholarship to an American university here in these great United States, when so many other deserving American students aren't receiving such aid. Of course, students can and should just borrow from their parents, especially since we've done nothing about student loan debt and intend to do nothing about it, but that doesn't change the fact that a communist will now be studying at a premier American university courtesy of the American taxpayer. Once again, Obama is showing his true socialist, communist, Kenyan, anti-colonialist, anti-American colors!"
Whew, lemme take this thing off now! There, that's better! Now I need to go bleach my brain.

Yesterday Mitt Romney attacked President Obama over the administrations handling of Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng. Citing very troubling developments, Romney said yesterday was a dark day for freedom and its a day of shame for the Obama administration.
Last night on Fox News, Bill Kristol advised Romney to stand down on the Chen case, calling his attacks on Obama foolish:
There is no need to butt into a fast moving story when the secretary of state is in Beijing with delicate negotiations and say its a day of shame for the Obama administration. Hillary Clinton is waking up right now. Lets see if she can pull this off in the next 12 hours or so.
Watch the clip:

The State Department announced this morning that the U.S. had reached a deal with China, with Beijing saying Chen could apply to study abroad and Washington saying an American university has offered him a fellowship.
