To understand economic struggles, Romney says he meets with regular families _ off the record
By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, May 4, 3:34 PM
PITTSBURGH Mitt Romney says he learns about what its like to struggle in a difficult economy by sitting down and chatting with regular people. But the Republican presidential candidate doesnt want anybody to see it and his campaign wont say who he meets with or when the meetings occur.
In interviews and on the campaign trail, Romney regularly says he learns about the struggling economy by talking to people affected by it.
He said earlier this week that he meets with families almost every day. On Friday, he said the talks are off the record and that he agrees to keep private the names of those he meets with.
Aides did not respond to a request for more information about the meetings and the participants.

(47,370 posts)how well that meeting with regular people went in Bethel Park, PA in April, resulting in Cookiegate. Or that get-together in Florida with unemployed voters, where he said he's "unemployed too". I think his campaign learned that Mitt cannot meet with regular people if there's a camera around.
Of course, I think he's just making it up. There's no way he could meet with people daily without something being leaked to the press.

(33,982 posts)He is a Mormon. Could easily be a component of that.
Not likely a part of his regular worship, temples and church meetinghouses are very status-oriented, you get assigned seating, and a certain number of seats based on contribution, but the church does get people together to talk regularly.
So it is possible poor Mormons have access to him through the church. However, 'poor' by his definition (and by Mormon social strata) is likely not what you and I would consider poor.
And that's about the extent of all the nice things I have to say about it right there.
cali
(114,904 posts)or anything else. It would be damned hard to keep such meeting secret.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)I just looked, I see no media coverage of him at temple. It's not like a church, you don't just walk in and sit wherever. I am giving the benefit of the doubt only, because the church is quite secretive on these things. It is technically possible to accomplish it.
This could also be a calculated setup for the media, to gain mittens some sympathetic press. If he's attacked for saying this, and then some families 'come forward on their own' with stories of meeting him, could gain him some sympathy for 'unfair media attacks'.
I'd be cautious with this one.

(24,461 posts). . . even if he IS telling the truth, what exactly is RMoney going to surmise from these meetings but "It's Obama's Fault"?
There's no atomic chance on Earth that he's going to be objective about, or come to any realistic conclusion on why they're struggling. Never mind that the real reasons have much to do with 31 years of a flat real-dollar wage trying to keep up with a never-decreasing cost of living and speculation-driven boom/bubble/spectacular crash economic shocks taking the place of boring profit/person/socially balanced capitalism. He doesn't see that because he's just not wired to. He's only wired to point fingers like an MBA would, even when there's no obvious target.
We saw the horrendous results of an MBA President running America like a top-heavy business.
renate
(13,776 posts)Even if he IS meeting with regular families in secret --which he isn't--like any member of the GOP he would never change his opinion or policies as a result of what he hears. It would be like listening to Charlie Brown's teacher: wa wa wa wa wa.
I think what you suggested about MBAs is very interesting and I'd never thought before about how they're trained to maximize profit, not to improve life for the people who do the work, but I think that is a really key point.
