Local media reported that Netanyahu had called a meeting of his security cabinet, including ministers, as well as senior officials from Israel's security services on Friday, after expressing his "vehement" opposition to the deal.
In a phone conversation with Obama, Netanyahu said that a final deal based on this agreement "would threaten the survival of Israel", while the prime minister's spokesperson Mark Regev quoted the premier as saying that the emerging deal "would not block Iran's path to the bomb. It would pave it".

(81,868 posts)Don't know if they have the guts to do it. That would be disastrous for the world, but that's what Netanyahu wants.

(81,868 posts)People need to remember that. There is no "better deal." The best deal for them is no deal, because they can keep tensions up and the possibility of war out there. Just look at what the Boltons and the Krystal's of the world have been saying.
It's the same strategy Netanyahu has on Palestine. He says he wants a two state solution but does NOTHING to get there. It's intentional. The US/world should treat Israel as an equal partner with the Palestinians if they want to find a positive outcome. That includes condemnations for both sides when necessary.
I think Netanyahu really screwed himself when he said there would be no two state deal. It will force action at the UN.

(5,790 posts)1) I'm surprised that the US wasn't more vehement about wanting Iran to offer up a framework for recognition of Israel as part of the deal. Maybe they did behind the scenes - I don't know.
2) Bibi backpedalled after his re-election on the no two-state comment, so where he really stands is anyone's guess. My guess is that what he really wants is to have the Palestinians in the equivalent of US Native American reservations -- something that creates an illusion of independence, but that can be readily controlled. I don't see any end to settlements, or relocation of Israeli citizens out of the occupied territory anytime soon.
