,
OHARA, Pa. Tagg Romney, the eldest son of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, announced via Twitter that he and his wife Jen have new twin boys, delivered by a surrogate today.
Happy 2 announce birth of twin boys David Mitt and William Ryder. Big thanks to our surrogate. Life is a miracle, Tagg tweeting, linking to a photo of himself and one of his new sons.
This the second time that Tagg, 42, and his wife, Jen,39, have used a surrogate. The same surrogate was used for the twins carried their youngest son Jonathan, who was born in August of 2010. Their other three children were not born via surrogacy.
On Facebook, Tagg gave even more details about the birth, confirming that the twins are his biological children. Jen and I are happy to announce the birth of twin boys, David Mitt and William Ryder, he wrote. Everyone is healthy and happy. They weighed in at 5 lbs 13 oz and 19-3/4 inches and 6 lbs. 13 oz and 19 inches. A special thanks to our gestational surrogate who made this possible for us. Life truly is a miracle, and we feel so blessed to be able to celebrate the arrival of these precious boys into our family. For those keeping score at home, these are grandchildren numbers 17 and 18 for my parents.
According to the official handbook of the Church of Latter Day Saints, to which the Romneys are members, surrogacy is not encouraged. The Church strongly discourages surrogate motherhood, the handbook reads.

(12,272 posts)But when it comes to a Mormon presidential nominee, we have to examine what effect his religion would have on his ability to perform his job. OK, this is assuming that the reason for a large family is because of religion. Maybe it isn't, but I am willing to bet it is.

Seriously, who cares? There are so many issues with Romney to pick on, his adult kids choices of how to conceive a family seems silly and misguided in a big way.

(12,272 posts)I agree with you about live and let live, but the Mormons are taught to believe they need to insinuate themselves into our lives. They believe theirs is the only true religion and lack respect for others and their beliefs. I never felt so negative about a religion until I lived and worked in Salt Lake City, Utah.

(6,795 posts)I grew up with them and have worked with them and have "family" that are Mormon.
I don't agree with most of their beliefs, but can kinda understand them. They do take care of eachother.
I was at my sister in law's parents' house one Sunday when the missionaries came over to talk. I sat there with my newborn great nephew in my lap and listened and then told them I was raised Catholic and went to 13 yrs of Catholic school and respect their beliefs but don't agree with their teachings and think that they do not value women. They just looked at me with big eyes and I got up and left the room with the baby. Interesting....
A friend of mine was engaged to a Mormon guy who had just returned from his mission. She sat down with me and another friend and asked us what she was supposed to do on her wedding night. This was a 22 yr old woman. It was kinda fun.......

(25,183 posts)They believe that the more children a man has, the higher the level of afterlife they achieve. In the "good old days" that used to be with multiple wives, now they have to do it with one wife, and as many surrogates as they can afford to hire.

(25,183 posts)from a Mormon friend of mine who's been married about four times. Each time, he got "sealed for all time and eternity" to a woman, but if he divorced her, and she wanted to remarry that way, she'd have to get a special dispensation from the church, which required his permission. I remarked that it seemed like serial polygamy, and he didn't object to my calling it that.

(25,183 posts)That they're not Mormons, or that there isn't some belief in number-of-spirit-babies determines level-of-heaven? I can find proof for the latter, although it may not be sold as hard as it was in the olden days.

Mitt wants things both ways. In a presidential election that's bullshit.
When it comes to Mitt's family it's "personal". When it comes to others' families its okay for government intrusion?
Sorry, no way. Publicly this does not get a pass when the hypocrisy is so blatant.

These are just greedy mofos who wanted more children. In spite of their church's dictates against this type of insemination, they've become cafeteria Mormons and decided to bypass church rules.
THAT is news, especially when Rethugs want to dictate family planning for everyone else. Especially when its religiously oriented

(49,212 posts)Please show these people some compassion. Politics aside, infertility sucks.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)Please stop trying to conflate REAL infertility with this. The rMoney's are simply getting older and finding it's more difficult to conceive. They are 39 and 42 years old. Sometimes that happens.
The pain of real infertility is NOT this and having known couples in their early 20s who discover their infertility and really have dealt with that pain, this is nothing like that. This is a wealthy, older couple who simply want to fulfill the Mormon ideal of a big family (despicably, against all environmental warnings) who have access to a young woman and the best medical care to keep up the church's ridiculous dictates.
LeftyMom
(49,212 posts)Maybe she had to have a hysterectomy or something, I'd assume so because that's really early to not be able to get pregnant anymore, especially with three successful pregnancies before that. It's not easy for a woman who can't have more kids in a culture that places such an emphasis on that, especially if she had no reason to expect it.
I wouldn't have six kids for love or money, but if they wanted to I'm glad they had the option. Let it go.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)then I will let it go.
Until then, I call them out on ALL hypocrisy when it comes to family decision making (and especially when it concerns their moral or religious hypocrisy, or the lack thereof)
cali
(114,904 posts)and what the fuck does compassion have to do with it? I don't know that they used a surrogate because of infertility and neither do you. Even if they did, there are plenty of kids to be adopted in this country. They have three of their own.
Fuck the Romneys.
