Graham, NC-- There are dog treats that thousands of you feed your dogs, but some dog owners say could be deadly to your pets.
News 2's Liz Crawford investigated this and found pet owners are coming together by the thousands with their horror stories. However, the FDA still hasn't recalled the products.
Kathleen Bedwell of Graham, NC called it a "scary close call" after both her dogs fell violently ill while she was on vacation. Her dog Juju was given a lot of Waggin' Train chicken jerky.
"Most of her food intake was from those treats that week," said Bedwell.

(39,961 posts)But I have two cats, and one of them is crazy about cat treats. I wouldn't have thought of it being the cat treats if she got sick - I'd assume it was the food. This is a terrible situation, but a very good reminder to examine everything you allow your pet to put in their bodies.
Poor dogs!

(34,179 posts)I opened a bag of Purina dry food, and saw that there was a free package of these treats inside. Luckily I had just heard of the problems with these treats and tossed them in the trash.
The reason that the FDA hasn't recalled these treats is because Purina has deep pockets. Danforth, a former Senator from Missouri was well known as "Purina's Senator" for all the help he gave the corporation and all the money he received in return. I don't know who is filling that role now, but I'm sure somebody is.

(5,946 posts)My dog has had about 1 a day for years (she is allowed up to 4 by directions). I have noticed her licking her lips a lot and drinking a lot of water lately. Cheaper to throw this away than pay a vet for kidney failure. I have some treats made in the USA she can eat instead.

Kidney failure the doc said. Looked like cushings disease to me but after hearing about these supposed 'treats', I will always wonder if it wasn't the Waggin' Train chicken jerky that caused her demise.
BTW, our little girl was never sick a day in her life up until then.
We miss you so much Ting-Ting!!!

(14,881 posts)but I give my boys bits of home cooked chicken instead. Spoiled Jakey won't eat his dinner without a bit of mine stirred through it, and Luna gets jealous if he doesn't get everything Jakey gets. So I eat a bit less meat, to share with them...
