I have some bad news.
This week, a bill to give the president Fast Track authority -- designed to push through the Trans-Pacific Partnership with little public debate -- will be introduced in the Senate.
The TPP is a disastrous trade agreement designed to protect the interests of the largest multi-national corporations at the expense of workers, consumers, the environment and the foundations of American democracy. It will also negatively impact some of the poorest people in the world.
Big corporations wrote the TPP behind closed doors. Incredibly, while Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry, and major media companies have full knowledge as to what is in this treaty, the American people and members of Congress do not. They have been locked out of the process.
All Americans, regardless of political ideology, should be opposed to the "Fast Track" process which would deny Congress the right to amend the treaty and represent their constituents' interests.
I will help lead the fight in the Senate to stop the Fast Track bill. Will you stand with me? Sign my petition and tell the Senate: Reject Fast Track authority for the TPP.
Let's be clear: the TPP is much more than a "free trade" agreement. It is part of a global race to the bottom to boost the profits of large corporations and Wall Street. Here are just a few of the ways the TPP is going to destroy the American economy. The TPP will:
Outsource jobs
Undercut workers' rights
Dismantle labor, environmental, health, food safety, and financial laws
Allow corporations to challenge our laws in international tribunals rather than our own court system
If the TPP was such a good deal for America, the administration should have the courage to show the American people exactly what is in this deal, instead of keeping the content of the TPP a secret.
We can stop Fast Track authority for the TPP in the Senate. Opposition from both parties is growing and momentum is building. With your support we can show Senators that the American people do not want them to give up their power to fix a bad deal.
Will you stand with me and DFA to stop the TPP? Sign our petition today and tell the Senate: Say NO to Fast Track!
Thank you for standing up against the TPP.
Sen. Bernie Sanders
Signed.
Thank you, Sen. Sanders!

Warren on Trans-Pacific Partnership: If people knew what was going on, they would stop it
I have heard the argument that transparency would undermine the Trade Representatives policy to complete the trade agreement because public opposition would be significant, Warren explained. In other words, if people knew what was going on, they would stop it. This argument is exactly backwards. If transparency would lead to widespread public opposition to a trade agreement, then that trade agreement should not be the policy of the United States.

Very interesting that Hillary chose Sunday to announce for Monday's News cycle, the very time when the TPP will be passed this week if the powers have their way-

It is shameful that Obama is still pushing this abomination on the people. I hope it is defeated, but Republicans are likely to vote for it, their Corporate Donors have no doubt contacted them already. And with some Dems also on the Wall St bandwagon, I don't have much hope for the people's interests.

(62,325 posts)won't matter one bit. I'm sure they've already counted the votes. Corporations don't leave anything to chance, profit is the goal and when money is at stake, they make sure in advance, all their employees know what they have to do.
Probably why Hillary has not mentioned it. She too probably knows the outcome.

In terms of labor it's a race to the bottom toward slave wages, $1-3 per hr. aka competitive with low wages in Asian countries. Eliminating the minimum wage law in the US is also ongoing (Gingrich, 'sure a kid can work as a janitor in his school' i.e. for $1 an hr.). TPP is a global coup to benefit the global elite investor class only.

Remember NAFTA! 1994. They said the US would be so rich that Cadillacs would be rolling off the US assembly lines, for all the new wealthy people this global trade agreement would make. It was a LIE, like 1992 Presidential candidate and businessman Ross Perot warned us. Listen to Sen. Bernie Sanders, he's telling us the deal, the truth. *20 years of NAFTA trade agreement and look what a mess the US is in!
We are still seeing the damages of NAFTA (North American Trade Agreement), CAFTA (Central American Trade Agreement), WTO (World Trade Organization)-
The TPP is the global coup d'état, the Mother of all 'trade agreements' - take action to stop it Monday. DO IT-

(6,145 posts)I'm old enough to remember the passage of NAFTA being an issue of national debate. People knew about it, discussed it over the dinner table and usually had an informed opinion one way or the other.
Thanks to the air-tight secrecy surrounding this deal we're days away from having it rammed down our throats and nobody knows it exists.
