Agency asks DA to investigate group asking people to sign Adolf Hitler on Walker recall petitions

The state’s election watchdog agency on Wednesday referred a mysterious group named “Mines for Wisconsin” to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office for investigation after the organization encouraged opponents of the effort to recall Gov. Scott Walker to sign recall petitions as “Adolf Hitler.”

Fliers from the group encouraged people to sign as Hitler and fill out their address as “666 Hell Street (your city).” It’s not clear where or how widely the fliers were circulated. Mines for Wisconsin, which listed a West Vliet Street address in Milwaukee, could not be reached for comment at the phone number listed on the flier.

“It is not illegal to sign ‘Adolf Hitler’ on a petition,” the flier reads. “Hitler was willing to destroy Germany in order to get his ideals in place. This is similar to what the recall people are doing in Wisconsin.”

But Kevin Kennedy, the director and general counsel of the Government Accountability Board, said it is against the law to intentionally falsify a name on a recall petition.

And: http://ncacblog.wordpress.com/2009/05/06/calling-for-a-book-burning-in-west-bend-wisconsin/

The Christian Civil Liberties Union’s Milwaukee branch has, in fact, filed a legal claim, arguing that the plaintiffs (all of whom are elderly) have suffered mental and emotional damage due to the book’s very presence at the Library. The claim names the city of West Bend, Mayor Kristine Deiss, the West Bend Library Board and Library Director as defendants and seeks to recover $30,000 per plaintiff, Deiss’ resignation and the book’s removal for a public burning (literally).

Additionally, the West Bend Common Council seems likely to reconsider its April 21 decision to dismiss four board members because of their refusal to remove controversial books from the young adult section of the library. The board members are accused of promoting “the overt indoctrination of the gay agenda.” Supporters of the library board intend to introduce a motion to reconsider at the May 18 council meeting.

NCAC, The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the Association of American Publishers, and PEN American Center urged the West Bend Common Council to reconsider its decision in a letter asserting that the dismissals threatened free speech in two ways by punishing the library board members for attempting to apply objective criteria in the selection of books and by pressuring the library to remove the controversial books.

Insane.

That group should be investigated and prosecuted to the full extend of the law for trying to undermine the petition process.
