Chess Grandmaster Gaioz Nigalidze caught cheating after hiding smartphone in tournament toilet

Nigalidze aroused suspicion after making repeated trips to the toilet during his matches

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/georgian-chess-grandmaster-gaioz-nigalidze-caught-cheating-after-hiding-smartphone-in-tournament-toilet-10173479.html

Georgian chess Grandmaster Gaioz Nigalidze faces a 15 year ban from the game after being caught cheating at the Dubai Open Chess Tournament, where he had been using a smart phone to analyse one of his matches, which he had kept hidden in a toilet.

Nigalidze’s cheating had been discovered by officials during his sixth round with Armenia’s Grandmaster Tigran Petrosian.

Petrosian had told the tournament’s staff he believed Nigalidze was getting help from a chess computer through a portable electronic device during the game. He said he began to suspect his opponent after noticing he was frequenting the toilet after each move during a crucial part of the game.

he's a grand master.

Is his status unwarranted? Did he get it by cheating?

How could one stoop so low as to sully the game of chess? For shame, Nigalidze.

You can't tell your Tigran Petrosians without a scorecard.

Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian (June 17, 1929 – August 13, 1984): former World Champion.
Tigran L. Petrosian (September 17, 1984 - ): current Grandmaster.

From the latter's Wikipedia bio:

Tigran L. Petrosian was born on 17 September 1984. His first name was deliberately chosen by his father to match the name of Tigran V. Petrosian, first Armenian who became the World Champion. When the late Tigran won the world title, Tigran's father dreamt that if he ever had a son he would call him Tigran.[2] The ex-world champ died a month before Tigran L. Petrosian was born.

I hadn't realized that the former World Champion died so young (55 years old, stomach cancer).

No chess computer will ever challenge a real player.

Oh look they have chess computers that are pretty decent but can't beat a world-ranked player.

Deep Blue just beat the champion? Well sure but it took a multimillion dollar supercomputer from a major corporation.

Crap I can't beat this $50 software even on a good day and I'm a good player.

Now Grand Masters need help from a free Play Store app on their phone (probably complete with ads for Jewels Saga every other turn) to compete in open tournaments.

It's just one short step from this to "Humans playing chess unassisted? Don't be silly - that's like a natural Tour de France winner!"
