Training Day

There’s an old saying in the sport of boxing, that I would suggest can be applied to politics. I’m thinking of it, mainly when I read posts that express the belief that most republicans would be easy to defeat in the upcoming presidential election.

The only way to make a fight against a potentially “easy” opponent actually be easy, is to train very hard, and fully prepare yourself for the hardest fight of your life. Anything less risks making an easy fight hard. In fact, that’s the easy opponent’s best and only hope.

Do republicans run obnoxious, unintelligent, and repulsive candidates? Yes, of course they do. It is difficult to think of any person less qualified than George W. Bush to be President. I’d have felt safer with the Zippy the Pinhead cartoon character sitting in the Oval Office. (Of course, I’ve never actually seen George and Zippy together in either a photograph or drawing. Hmmmm!)

I don’t care who the republican candidate is: I will view that person as a serious threat to our nation.

I don't remember where I heard this, not that it matters, but your post made me think of it. It went like this:

Train hard, fight easy.

I agree completely with your post.

I learned that when I was young. And now, I communicate that message to any young man I help to train for competition in the ring.

When it comes to republican candidates, we need to recognize them as rattle snakes. They are dangerous. Don't ever take them for granted.

Even if it a bunny. Bunny rabbits can kill. Noone should take any serious adversary lightly.

Also suckered punching is fine as well as shots to the groin and always, always, kick them when they are down.

Wait until after the fight is over, before making jokes about the opponent. Until you've won the fight, approach it 100% seriously.

who is being reported on in the news today. And too many people are underestimating him.

I mean, I love the one clip of him getting the little drink of water. It's a giggle, for sure. But at the same time it cracks us up, it will "humanize" him to many republicans.

Otherwise, it really would be a slam dunk. And the people respond more favorably to cynicism coming from that machine than truth and honest reporting coming from any liberalish media that broadcasts. We're swimming upstream and fighting at the same time, while they're riding the current.

One of my softball teammates has that slogan on a T-shirt.

It has merit, because it's true.

Republicans are too easily dismissed and not seen as a threat. I was guilty of that when George W. Bush ran and I dismissed him as having no chance. I will never do that again. I truly thought that man had so little to offer the United States and that he was so intellectually challenged that he would never be elected. Let us not underestimate the opponents.

I remember thinking that there was no way -- just absolutely no way -- that conscious, thinking people would vote for Ronald Reagan.

I learned from that. While I was correct in that no conscious, thinking person would vote for Reagan, millions of unconscious people did. I say that in all seriousness, and not as a joke about, or insult of those people. Relatively few people are truly "awake."

Those who are must be fully aware of the dangers that the opposition poses. And fully prepared to combat it, in election contests.
