apparently the hitchhikers I pick up on the way home from work are quite fond of political discussion, but not terribly astute.
I am noticing a trend of black=stupid or something like that b/c not sure how anyone comes to the conclusion that obama is dumb. he talks with sentences that make sense, something exceedingly rare in a politician. also he sometimes talks to say things, also pretty rare in a politician.

(62,444 posts)It is quite common for highly intelligent and educated people to carefully choose their words, and to pause while mentally constructing phrases, in order to speak in full grammatic sentences. That sort of speech is common among professorial types.
What I have found to be the case among people who have not had a lot of exposure to that sort of thing is that since they wouldn't know a complete sentence if it bit them in the ass (viz. the popularity of Sarah Palin as a "great speaker" is that they perceive this type of speech as "stammering".
What they normally expect in extemporaneous elocution is an uninterrupted flow of sound which, while not making much sense overall, contains phrases that appeal to them.
Accordingly, among such people, the fact that Palin can just rattle off nonstop nonsense is a speaking style which, to them, suggests confidence and knowledge. By contrast, they find a more knowledgeable and careful speaker to be halting, uncertain, and less intelligent.

(30,058 posts)It used to be Nancy Pelosi's fault but now it isn't Boehner's fault. It has been Harry Reid's fault also but not McConnell's fault. Now it is a joke line of its Obama's fault. I like the We are going to take our country back, who on the hell are they going to take it back?

(6,409 posts)My neighbors are like that. They were wishing Obama would die, so we could be rescued from the huge tragedy of having a black guy as president. They also believe in stuff like the "sovereign citizen" theories, and God-only-knows what else. The other day, I was pumping gas at the Costco, and some guy next to me was blabbing in a loud voice about how Obama was sending us all straight to hell, so I said, "Really? I just filled my tank for twenty bucks, and it cost me forty when Bush was prez." He just turned red and sputtered. He'll probably hunt me down and shoot me. I usually don't say anything, but sometimes I just can't resist.
