In a nod to fiscal prudence, Hollande has promised to balance France's books by the end of 2017, a feat that has not happened in 30 years. To that end, he is insistent that the budget deficit target of 3% of gross domestic product for next year must be reached.

4. How 'socialist' are they when they had wanted to nominate IMF's Strauss-Kahn?

The IMF is the arch-enemy of any *real* socialist and I can't say Strauss-Kahn was really behaving like one.

I think Hollande is a center-left social-democrat, but I have a hard time calling him a socialist. That's like saying Greece's Papandreou was a socialist. Yeah, in name only. Just like when the US media say the Democratic party is left-wing, it's total bullshit.

Hollande is very much a part of the political class but he's way left of Sarkozy or Cameron...right now I'd take Keynes over Friedman

6. Well that is a good point. The PS in France is a slightly left of center party.

There was an actual left coalition in the election, and they didn't do too badly, but their gains were unfortunately overshadowed by the fascist Le Pen.
